Crushed tumbled glass gravel substrate (great for lighting effects?)

Just my 2 cents, but my favorite colors on the site you linked to are the amber brown, the deadleaf, and the gray. Any of those mixed together would look pretty natural. Paired with some of those big hunks of glass in the tank pictures, in amber or smoky gray, would look cool I think, but then again maybe not as colorful as you're going for.

I just email AGS and inquired about getting some samples. I am trying to build the carribbean color scheme, so i asked for those colors (dark blue, turquoise, and clear) in the sizes of 1, 2, and 3 as these look to be the most similar to regular aquarium gravel. I asked them for a quote on the samples so as soon as i hear back from them i will order them and take pics when i get it to show everyone for example

I also asked them if they had slate type glass to look like slate so that i could build caves and stuff

i think black sand is great looking. I have black gravel with some colored gravel in it, as bought form petco. If i had to go sand, it would be black as well.

Edit:
I just peeked at estes website and i like the options you have for substrates. BUT hell, the colored sand is so jacked up in price, 20 bu for a 5lb bag, i would buy it maybe, if i couldnt live without it.

i would had went for clear glass if they had so the color of the lights transfer through although it wouldnt look very natural. how are you gonna get the lights under the tank?

assuming that the bottom of the tank is raised due to the frame, i have a little bit of room to work with. I have two choices of lighting that would be best, cathodes or LED's. Cathodes have very thin bulbs, about an 8th of an inch but have ballasts that are about an inch thick. LED's are about 1/2 inch thick with a circuitboard at most but usually come in tubes. I can take them out, i have done it before, hence how i have a couch with underglow :). They dont have ballasts and have the ability to chnage color if i buy that specific kit. Downside to LED is that it does have the light spread of a cathode/neon. I might put glass under the tank to fit within the frame so that the leds can bounce around and provide a good spread of light. I hope there is enough clearence for LED's so that i can do million color to change it :). But who knows, i might just go with white and call it a day.

Another option will be i dont need to worry about clearence under the tank because certain stand arent flat like a table and just hold the frame. In that case, no prob i have ways to affix the strips or can build something.

yeah i was wonderin how you where gonna change the bulbs but with leds thats not necessary for years. will it be expensive fot the lights?

Yeah the glass and the color changing are really not my thing I wonder if constantly changing lights will stress out the fish because rapid color change in some marine animals can mean danger and other things so im also quite curious on how all this will work out for you I think it will be neat but again not for me

lol id be cool to have a nuclear theme to your tank. with neon green glass and green lights under the tank to make the gravel glow. and have like a mini nuclear plant as a decoration and have a diver in a hasmat suit. lol. and get fish that look mutated

The lights themselves can be a bit pricey depending on how its done. LEDs are more expensive than cathodes. Depending on the size of the tank i will have to choose the LED strips according.

Dex - i was thinking the same thing, the color changing can be set on automatic or on manual control. I dont plan to have the bed lit all of the time as this may throw the fish off a bit but its cetainly good for when i have company and stuff. WHite would be the safest color to go with lighting wise, but the final decision has yet to be seen.
