Crushed tumbled glass gravel substrate (great for lighting effects?)

you should try glowfish in the setup bcuz they are really shiny and the extra light from the rocks would enhance that.

Oh memories!! I had my first tank - a 5.5 gallon with crushed blue glass just like you propose. Same color and everything. That was back in '76. The fish never got cut from it. Of course, I did not know about water changes or vacuuming or the nitrogen cycle back then. But I can tell you when I swirled the whole thing around to "clean it" boy did it hold a ton of stuff! But, I must say, I did truly love that gravel.

The fish really lived great for as many years as I had the tank. Even with all that gunk, in hindsight, I suppose there was some sort of "good" bacterial process going on that prevented ammonia overload.

First of all you are talking a LOONG time ago for this ole lady!! It was tropicals. I remember an angel, guppies and neons. I remember being scarred for life after a heater disaster in that tank.

If I were to do it I think white is what I would go with so as not to startle the fish and wouldn't have it pulse or anything maybe a lazy fade in brightness?

on the AGS website they state that the glass is a place for good bactria to culture and what not. Whether its true or not who knows. Either way i look at it its like normal gravel because reg gravel and glass are both inert. The glass is tumbled so there shouldnt be any sharp edges. If you vaccumm the gravel/glass, it should pick up the debris anyways which is what u are supposed to do . No substrate is dirtless.

Dex, that nuclear theme is a good idea. It wouldnt be my first choice, i would do it in a small secondary tank, but not as a main one. I want a happy tank , not post heroshima.

yeah that sounds cool pesonally i like colors slowly fading from one to another, i dont quite understand how that effects the fish does it make them insecure, i always thought fish where color blind.

if they are color blind, it doesnt matter, anything that is color blind can see shades and thus can identify with shades the represent danger.
