Cyanobacteria growth-any suggestions?

Be careful though, as this broad-spectrum antibiotic will eliminate your biofilter.

I second this as well. I constantly have cyano in my 16g of doom. I dropped 50+ ramshorns in there and it eliminated the bulk of it. Not sure if their waste produced the needed nitrates or if they ate the algae, but its the only thing that has worked at all for me. (tried maracyn, tried blackouts, etc). The maracyn caused a mini-cycle however, which was less than desirable.

Use maracyn at half strength and it will not harm your biofilter too much. In heavily planted tanks, it shouldn't be much of an issue anyway. Cyano is pretty easy to get rid of.

I like the maracyn at half strength if going that route, but I'm saving that as a last resort.

So the cure is either a) maracyn or b) MORE nitrates? (As in less plants or more fish?) Won't the Stocking Police on the forum come after me????

Still confused about low nitrates causing or encouraging cyanobacteria.

Also curious for those of you who used Maracyn - how long did you dose? Did you do the full 5 days? Would it still be 5 days even if at 1/2 dose?

Sorry for the multiple posts. Here is a site that advocates 200mg/10g of Maracyn for use on cyanobacteria:

http://www.thetropicaltank.co.uk/algae.htm#blue

The maracyn dose for treating fish is 1 package per 10g and each package contains 400mg. That supports the 1/2 dose theory.

I tried blackouts but it didn't work finally settled on the EM treatment.

Got out as much as I could did a 50% wc then dosed per directions except on the last part of the instructions said to do another wc after the 2nd day of the last treatment. I decided to wait till wc day so the last of the med sat in the tank from Wed to Sat. Then I did another 50% wc. Been over a week and it hasn't reappeared.

I added an AC 20 to the tank for more water movement.

I also lowered my lighting period from 9 hours to about 4 hours during the treatment.

I actually just looked at the website for Maracyn - each package is actually 200mg.

I would suggest more water movement and dosing nitrate to the tank before I would suggest using Maracyn. Its easy to dose Nitrate, just get yourself some Fleet Enema.

Fleet enema has the following active ingredients:

Monobasic Sodium Phosphate (19 g) (Saline laxative/bowel cleanser), Dibasic Sodium Phosphate (7g) (Saline laxative/bowel cleanser)

I'm not following you on this. This is phosphate based.

sorry got em confused. Spectracide stump remover will give you nitrates:
For Nitrate (N) - use (KNO3), such as Spectracide Stump Remover, Salt Petre, Green Light Stump Remover, Grant's Stump Remover
