Cyanobacteria growth-any suggestions?

hmm..interesting theory/observation about nitrogen(nitrates)

Bluegreen algae(aka cyanobacteria) are capable of producing their own food including nitrogen fixation(they can use nitrogen in the air)
I wonder if the corelataion with nitrates(nitrogen) may help the existing plants in the tank outcompete the cyanobacteria somewhere else..but them being photosynthetic it makes me wonder.
increased circulation and decreased light does have an effect on it..as does Maracyn (I have used it several times with no ill effect tho at half dose)
you do need to make sure you remove all of the cyanobacter tho or it will come back.
interstingly I find that in my 75 with wisteria in it..it tends to be the tank with the most problem...in part the wisteria seems to cause dead spots in the tank and also possibly it is a nitrate hog.

I'll need to check my nitrates to see if this does have an impact.

As if I didn't need another reason to take the wisteria out of my tank!! I loved the way that stuff looked when I first put it in, but after 6 weeks, I am tired of the 3x per week trimming. I agree - the wisteria seems to be a prime place for it to grow.

sorry got em confused. Spectracide stump remover will give you nitrates:
For Nitrate (N) - use (KNO3), such as Spectracide Stump Remover, Salt Petre, Green Light Stump Remover, Grant's Stump Remover

in pre mixed plant foods, whats this called? I would not want to go out and buy,Spectracide Stump Remover, Salt Petre, Green Light Stump Remover, Grant's Stump Remover LOL! isn't there a bottle of something with all this in it already?

you could do that, but it is much cheaper to just buy one of those products and add a measured amount. I put 1/2 teaspoon in my 75 3 times a week. Course it is pretty heavily planted.

I already have all the seachem ferts. lots of them! so which one will contain all these ?.

Plus 2 liter bottles of flourish and flourish excel

Flourish Nitrogen I would presume. But using flourish will get expensive in the long run.

So if I read you correctly - the thing to do is dose MORE nitrogen to combat the cyanobacteria.
