Daily Log of Constructing a Tropical Fish Pond

I was thinking about the underliner... Couldn't you go to Walmart and buy some cheap blankets? Wouldn't that do the same thing for much less $? Also for the waterfall have you thought of building something beside the pond? I'll see if I can draw something up...

Looks nice! Are those metal clips/braces the only things holding the 4 sides together?

Well yes and no...

There are 3 metal pieces for each side. Both top and bottom have the 90 degree things and are rated for like 800 lbs each. Then there is the little clip deals in the middle of the piece.

I still have to install the 2 boards that will connect the 8 foot sides. I also bought these joiners, they are those spikey things that you drive into boards to make trusses and housing things. All the bottom boards will get one of these. Then on top another layer of wood is going up. The boards are 8" wide. I plan on these being the major stress memebers for this project. They will be bolted to the top of the existing structure you see in the pics. The pic of the pond is upside down, I forgot to mention that. **** I forgot another thing a lowes......back I go tomorrow.....I need the metal elbows for the 8" top pieces......

GREAT idea. I will probably do that instead of the newspaper. Thanks again!

For what it's worth...

This is a good idea but probably impossible with a liner. It would be very hard to seal a bulkhead fitting to make an overflow. If this was a rigid pond that would be a great idea though....

I am really stuck on how to make a waterfall with this pond.......I guess I will have to cross that bridge when I get there.

Looking good. Have you decided what to do about the underliner? We used newspaper and sand as an underlay for our fibreglass outdoor pond.

Actually now I might do a newspaper liner on the ground and then get some cheap blankets and line the rest of the pond.......

Blankets is a good idea. It should also keep the fish warm. Wish we thought of that years ago.

more pics on the pond.

Take a look at the supports and tell me if you think they are strong enough to bear the weight of the water when she is full. Bottom side is up in these pics

I think the top boards that you have yet to put on will help immensely.

Okay lousybreed, I'm impressed! :bowing:

Sorry for getting into this conversation 2/3 ways into it, but I skimmed the previous posts and this is looking very very nice.

As for the waterfall (you must have one!), what were you thinking? The splash over like you sketched out, or more of a fountain-type design?

My dad and I build a large Koi pond (25'x12'ish x4') about 14 years ago, and we developed a pumping system that draws the water up hill (12 foot run) and empties the water into a man-made riverbed which overflows (i.e. waterfall) into the pond vai a 1 foot drop. It's not premised off of any overflow design, but rather a simple pump. Similar to a sump, but this is specifically desgined for Koi ponds (so of course it cost more), but it can move over a 1,000G per hour. Thankfully it's adjustable!

I'm going over Saturday for Draft-Day and will try my best to remember the camera to grab some snap shots for you! It's a lined pond vs. a hard walled raised pond, but this system will work on any design. (I will draw something up and scan/post it here for your view).

Not sure if these are covered or not already, but how are the side edges married up? The metal brackets? What type of base and liner are you planning on?

Sorry to be a pest, but this is coming along awsomely! Is awesomely a word? It should be! :D

Love the pictures bro!:dance2:
