Daily Log of Constructing a Tropical Fish Pond

This may not be what you are after, but there is no visible evidence of the liner, pump or hose anywhere.

Sorry for the lack of artistic ability!

I wish I could do that...this thing isn't going to be buried in the ground and it would be very hard to make something that would look good. Plus this house is a rental so NO earth moving!!! I still have to figure a waterfall out you are right!! It is a required feature of a pond.......We have to figure out somthing that goes on the pond edge....

Okay lousybreed, I'm impressed! :bowing:

Sorry for getting into this conversation 2/3 ways into it, but I skimmed the previous posts and this is looking very very nice.

As for the waterfall (you must have one!), what were you thinking? The splash over like you sketched out, or more of a fountain-type design?

My dad and I build a large Koi pond (25'x12'ish x4') about 14 years ago, and we developed a pumping system that draws the water up hill (12 foot run) and empties the water into a man-made riverbed which overflows (i.e. waterfall) into the pond vai a 1 foot drop. It's not premised off of any overflow design, but rather a simple pump. Similar to a sump, but this is specifically desgined for Koi ponds (so of course it cost more), but it can move over a 1,000G per hour. Thankfully it's adjustable!

I'm going over Saturday for Draft-Day and will try my best to remember the camera to grab some snap shots for you! It's a lined pond vs. a hard walled raised pond, but this system will work on any design. (I will draw something up and scan/post it here for your view).

Not sure if these are covered or not already, but how are the side edges married up? I used metal brackets and wooden supports. It will be much clearer once the pics are finished. The metal brackets? What type of base and liner are you planning on? 45 mill EPDM liner, base will be newspaper and walmart blankets!!!

Sorry to be a pest, but this is coming along awsomely! Is awesomely a word? It should be! :D No problem, thanks for the motivation!

Love the pictures bro!:dance2:

thanks for the motivation....the answers are in your text in my quote and below

the liner is 45 mil epdm, the underliner is newspaper and cheap walmart blankets
the metal brackets are holding the beast together with some wooden supports....

One thing you could do would be to use a 5gal bucket or rubbermaid or something for the waterfall, and set it on top of the corner of the pond, have the water pumped into this, and biuld a spout out of a drain fitting and some pvc to channel it back into the pond. I'm not sure how it would look, but if you painted the whole thing a dark green it would be fairly unobtrusive, and maybe put a bunch of watercress or something in the top, as it grows it would spill over the sides and hide the bucket a little bit.

Just getting into this post late. It really looks great. You've done a nice job with the woodwork.
As far as the water fall, you may want to think about a fountain approach instead. There are lots of decorative "fountain" heads that could be mounted to the side. I've seen frogs spitting water, birds, even water buckets set slightly sideways. Ofcourse, you could opt for the little boy relieving himself into the pond. You could also set up rocks in a corner of the pond with the frog or whatever set on them, instead of the wood frame.
Good luck, keep the pictures coming!

I like the fountain idea very much. Or sit and anchor a 5-10 gallon wooden barrel on the edge. The pump discharge could come up through the bottom. Drill a hole near the top and put in a halved bamboo spout or cut a half moon at the very top for the water to flow back down the side.

oh my....the wooden bucket idea is AMAZING!!!!! It will fit in perfectly with the theme of the tank. WOW you guys have been a great help. I was thinking of putting the bucket in the corner and I will position it so that it doesn't splash to much on the wooden frame and also so it makes the wonderous splashy sounds we love so much!

Its lunch time and I brought over 3 other dudes to help flip the pond and place it in the yard. Pics to follow tonight. This is kinda the final resting place for the pond. I am going to order the liner tonight!
