Daily Log of Constructing a Tropical Fish Pond

Most nursery places around here carry the full and half barrels, but to be truthful, they don't look like they would hold water. Like your idea of a redwood planter, seems as if it would match your design more. Even iy will probably need a liner to hold water.

Many times those barrels are used up whisky barrels. They've probably been left to dry out and won't initially hold water, but as the wood swells up, they'll hold water again. Might just need a break-in period. A liner would probably be a good idea anyway because who knows what's been in them.

Here are the pics

Ok today I finished making everything look back to normal. I cleaned the stone off the pond and put the bark around the pond. I checked the pond level and it is pretty good, maybe 1/2" off from far corner to far corner. I also sanded some more of the wood I will be using as the top of the pond. It is in rough shape and will need lots of TLC.

In the pics I show my modification. You will notice 2 bolts on each edge of the pond. This is treaded rod (7.25 inches long) and each end has a bolt and a stainless washer. The rod runs thru both side assemblies. You can see both bolts on the sides of the pond in one pic. Those are the nuts and washers. I hope this makes sense. This will give the pond MUCH more strength!

I ordered my liner and pumps and filters today. Total cost around $150 delivered to the door. I got a 45 mil epdm firestone liner for $90 to the door, by far the best price on the web. I still need to get some walmart blankets for my "under-liner".

When I buy a redwood planter (I am going with that idea most likely although I will check out the nurserys for the barrels) I am going to "paint" the inside with aquarium safe silicone and they stick a liner on it to be safe.

If I get a barrel I could create a mini pond in the barrel with different fish!!! This could get interesting if I had a "two story" pond!!! More stuff to think about!!!

Good progress, well done lousybreed!

I cut 2 of the top boards for the pond. Hopefully the pics will clear everything up. I still have to cut the other 2 sides. Hopefull my equipment will come in early next week so I can wrap this up next weekend!
