Daily Log of Constructing a Tropical Fish Pond

I finished the waterfall barrel. lots of silicone was used, what a mess.... right now I am letting it cure. Fitting liner pieces on the inside wasn't as easy as I thought and it took a while. I will give it 2 days to cure. My wife has the camera so no pics right now......

No waterfall work tonight. Instead I went to a pet store and bought some more fish and plants. I bought 2 paradise fish and 2 pineapple swords. Both were pairs so hopefully babies before summer is over! I also bought some java moss to put on a log and java fern which is also attached to another log. I bought one bunch of hornwort for additional fish cover. Tomorrow its softball time, so I don't see myself doing much with the waterfall.

So the total fish count is:
3 white clouds
4 gold barbs
2 paradise fish
2 pineapple swords
2 dojo loaches (don't see these guys too often)

That gives me a total of 26 inches of fish in 550 gallons. The stocking level is equivelent to one 2.5" fish in a 55 gallon aquarium!!!

glad to hear everything is working out. you could come up with some kind of lid. that will trap heat in and bring the temps up.

Just read thru the entire thread again. I like this idea for the winter. Maybe if I put a clear lid on it during the winter months I could keep most of the fish out there year long. Do you think the fish could survive in water around 50-55F? Maybe put a heater in the pond during winter?

Also it is time to take some pics. I will take some snappies tomorrow, I promise!

As far as heating goes, maybe you could look into the heaters they use in livestock tanks? It won't boil the fish but I think they can bring the temp up about ten degrees, should keep the fish comfy.

GREAT project you have going...makes me want to build my own! Ha!

lousybreed..that looks great. Even without the barrel waterfall. What a fantastic centerpiece for your backyard. Something to enjoy for a very long time.

Tonight I put a second coat of silicone on the barrel because I noticed that I missed several spots. By Sunday I hope to have that nice brook trickle sound in my back yard!

Looks good!
