Dead clown, maybe Ich HELP!

just an update, the tank temp was lowered 2 degree's and everyone appears to breathing 1000 million times better, I am guessing that is because thay are getting use to the salt in the water also.... just thought I would give you an update

bad news today after adding salt later in the day I lost 2 more clowns, and 1 appears to be on the verge of death... the other fish are coping, but I am not sure how much longer of this treatment thay can tolerate, I relize I have to destroy all the ick though... I am adding around 100 teaspoons of salt to the tank per day and keeping at temp at close to 86 Degrees, does this all sound correct? I have to do this for a week?

wow really bad news, all the fish in my tank are pretty much dead. the last 2 survivers where 2 bala sharks thay looked extremly awfully where strugeling to breathe VERY discolored, and had bulging eyes, finding all the other dead fish in the tank I tried saving them by placing them in a bucket with water close to the same tempeture but thay immediatly died upon me placing them into the bucket. the tetras are still alive but are extremly discolored and look awful, this pretty much all happend in the last 12 hours, last time I added some salt... the bala sharks had bright red ( like blood pools) under the stomach and one of them had the color sucked right out of him in the last 12 hours and looked like a dull pinkish instead of his bright shiny silver self like I found him this morning. I feel like I murdered them all with the salt and tempeture raise because I know the small case of ich wouldent do this! and most of them went from looking fine, to looking AWFUL in the last 12 hours. What should I do? and what happend?
PS: even the plants dont look so well, everything was fine besides a few spots of ich before i started the salt heat thing, i Must have done somthing terribly wrong I feel like I made a poison soup for them to live in!

I just saw your updates, sorry for the bad news. Something that I have to ask is how much salt per gallon do you have in the tank. You make a couple of references to adding a daily dose. The salt level needed is 1-3 tsp per gallon total, once the total is reached, no more salt needs to be added except when doing a water change.

I caught it too late too. Mike, if you'er out there, please get back to us. I re-read the thread and see where I could have caught it, but I had assumed you were breaking up the 100 teaspoons over a 2 day period, not adding 100 teaspoons per day. With salt treatment, the salinity level remains the same, just add the salt once, and if you did a water change, then adding salt treated water back to the tank would be adviseable until several days after the last spot falls of. I'm really sorry we didn't make that more clear somehow.

Its not your fault, I just misunderstood the article and then got another piece of information from another source and thought I was doing everything right the whole time. This mishap was extremely unfortunate but It was my fault for not toughly understanding the instruction like I had thought, hopefully some good can come out of this for future people using this treatment that may get confused like I did. It really sucked to lose all the fish though, I really liked the AFB, and it sucked to lose that one a lot as he was a real fighter. 1 fish did survive... the Buffalo Cichlid. So I am guessing it was the salt content alone that killed them all?

also what should I do now and where should I go from here?

Yeah, it was likely the salt content that killed them all. It could have been that coupled with stress from the Ich too, if it makes you feel better that way. For now, I'd do a 50% water change today and a 50% 2water change tomorrow. Maybe more. Is the Cichlid Ich free now? Also, any idea how many teaspoons of salt you added?

4 containers of Morton Salt the size is " 20 oz 1lb 10 oz 737g" I added 4 of those at a rate of 1 per day tank is 72G, the cichild never showed signs of ich in the first place or the ABF but the rest did. so do a 50% water change today ? so around 100 teaspoons per day for 4 days. will this effect my tank being cycled and will my bennefical bacteria now if thay arent allready?

Not so sure on the bacteria question. Chances are if anything it will be lack of ammonia that hurts it more than salt, but I am unsure. You've added 6 and a half pounds of salt to the tank. A 50% water change will not equal 100 teaspoons that I can imagine at this point, more like 3.25 pounds, a 50% water change the next day will only be half of that because the remaining 3.25 pounds has been diluted throughout the water column, so something likw 1.75 pounds. Once you've done maybe 3 or 4 50% changes I would look into perhaps moving the cichlid to a Q-tank. There, simply keep him in 1 tsp per gallon of water. After this, you can start dosing the main tank with pure ammonia. This can feed the bacteria and with water testing, you can find out perhaps where you are in your cycle.
