Ok, I've been going back and forth ALOT in my head..JD, Sev's, JD, Sev's...well JD has won!!
Now he/she will go in a 75g, this is an odd size 75 it is long and thin (60"x13")!
I think I am going to just go with one, so I don't have to worry about breeding and spawning and all that.

I have been looking at tank mates, these are what I came up with to choose from, Blue Acara, Festas, Firemouth, rainbow, Angels, cons. Now obviously I know I can go getting ALL of these as much as I'd love to.
My question is...are any of these a definate NO?

Now my fav's that I really would like to somehow work in would be...Acara & festas if possible Angels. I really do like the rainbow and cons also so suggest away please!

Great choice :ok: I love my JD's. If you are going to only get one I would try and get a male. I wouldn't keep angels (too peaceful) or Festa (get too big). I keep mine with firemouths and they do pretty well. I would only keep 3 to 4 fish in that size tank, but beware if you get a pair they may take out all the other fish in the tank.

That is why I only want one, I didn't want to worry about ending up with a pair that would spawn and want to kill everyone in the tank. What I read on the festas were they get to be about 8"? Do you think that would be to big?
Ok, then NO angels, they were questionable to me too. But I read a couple different things saying they would be ok together.
That is why I alway's ask everything you read contridicts from one another and I never know which to believe.

Thank you for the reply!

Ok, after looking some more..every other article I found about the festa say's anywhere from 12-16" in size they are definatly out.
So, then that leaves me with 1 JD, and then a choice of FM, Acara, and/or Cons.

FM pair?...JD should mop up unwanted fry; if JD doesn't consider adding a raphael cat too. Several caves, with territories at each end.

Is the JD active or reclusive?

I have a 6" JD with a 5" male con right now in a 55g, and they get along perfectly fine. There might be an occasional chase but no one ever gets harmed so it's fun to watch.

JDs can be a gamble. I had one that never did anything but hide. He was a gorgeous fish, but you never saw him.

Be sure to get a small(er than everyone else) JD and add it to the mix last. Provide some hardscape cover for all fish. Stick to fewer but aggressive tankmates that don't get huge (eg: Firemouth, Texas, Jeweled).

Single JDs, if they feel that they own the tank (which happens if you add them 1st), can and usually will kill everything else you try to put in there, even stuff twice as big. There's a reason that the common name of this species is Jack Dempsy.

I added one to my 1st FW tank after doing a ZD cycle. He ate all of the ZDs even though he was <2" long when i bought him. He literally crammed them down by grabbing their heads and bashing their tails against the glass. A month later, I added a 1.5x sized tiger oscar. Things were fine for 2 days, then he shredded the oscar. He lived alone in the tank for at least 10 years after that, surviving a 2000 mile move, among other things.

He was a great fish.

Be careful with a con. I have had a JD and Con spawn before. Though beautiful in color, this is just un-natural. JD males are beautiful fish. Some lighter females are really pretty as well. I have had several JDs and all mixed pretty well w/ others (con, betta,jewel...) as long as they were young when I got them.

I keep a Firemouth, a Salvini and a P. Senegalus with mine.
