Diagnostic Help Please

Don't mean to hijack this thread but I am dealing with Columnaris right now as well. My question is that my local LFS doesn't have Maracyn-2 and it would take too long to get by mail so will Maracyn work? My LFS carries Maracyn but not Maracyn-2 for some reason. Then, once I get rid of the columnaris on the fish do I still have to break down the tank they are in and sterilize it or will it be alright since I used the Maracyn? I have never dealt with Columnaris so this is new to me. I have already lost one fish and I am afraid I am about to lose another.

I know one fish has columnaris but a few others have white specks on them that looks like salt grains and I am wondering if it is ich or part of the columnaris. Any ideas? It is not cottony or fungus looking. It looks like ich but I have been medicating for ich for a few days now with Quick Cure, aquarium salt and Melafix and it doesn't seem to be doing any good. Any advice. My water temp is at 78 and nitrites and ammonia is at 0 with nitrates at 10. One tank is a 39 gallon and the other is a 20 gallon. Above perimeters are for both tanks. One has nitrates of 10 the other is like 12. I have been doing 25% water changes every other day as well.

Sorry to here that your dealing with Columnaris, my struggle still isn't going well. I was out of town for 4 days and did a 40% WC before leaving. Upon returning, it looks like I lost about another 3 fish and a few more are still doing bad. My EB Ahli's dorsal fin in the rear is deteriorating badly, much how the other's did before they passed.

I'm not sure, but I might have another disease in the tan as well. My sunshine peacock is getting some black "dirt" looking stuff on his caudal fins and between those, some kind of whitish yellow build up. Very strange. Any suggestions on what that is or how I should further treat this. Maracyn-2 didn't seem to be completely effective. Should I switch to Maracyn or try something else?

Please help...

jlink17: You may want to try lowing the temp below 74 deg as it is suppose to reduce the viability of Columnaris. Also, in the Maracyn-2 disease guide, it actually recommends using Maracyn to treat Columnaris, which is weird bc it is gram negative and Maracyn treats gram positive.

Good luck and get on it early!

A little more update, my EB Ahli seems to keep having long clear/white strings coming out of his anus. Not like feces, but something else. Any thoughts?

jlink17. If you are treating both Columnaris and Ich you will have to separate the fish as lowering the temp is required when treating Columnaris and when treating Ich you have raise the temp.

FSUphitau85. White stringy things hanging from the anas of a fish usually indicated internal parasites. I would get the Columnaris under control first before looking at treating anything else.
