Just doing some research on the Calvus and have seen them under a few scientific names. I've seen Altolamprologus calvus, Neolamprologus calvus, and just Lamprologus Calvus. Are these all the same fish or are they different? Some place say the Calvus is a shell dweller while others say that it only needs rocks. Which is correct? Thanks.

EDIT: Also, i'm looking into getting some multis and was wondering if the Japanese snail shells and Babylonia Spirata shells on this page would be ok? I was thinking about getting a mix of those and some whales eye shells.

Altolamprologus calvus would be the correct scientific name on what your talking about, the females will breed inside a shell males wont..

Those shells sound fine for a multi colony..

Yep most of my shells came from there as well except the escargot shells they came from my local fresh market 69 cents a shell..

:iagree: 100% spot on

Altolamprologus is the current scientific name and they are rock dwellers, but do sometimes breed in shells if they can fit. People have reported that calvus will get stuck in shells that are too small...

There are "calvus caves" available online, essentially a tall, narrow breeding cave specifically suited to them. No danger of the female getting stuck in one of those. The fry are notoriously delicate though, ultra sensitive to water changes and requiring loads of food.

Thanks for the help in clearing up the scientific name dilemma.

Thanks for the info. Should be useful if i ever decide to try and breed them. Right now i'm only planning on getting a single. I just wanted to be sure about whether they are shelldwellers or not because i didn't want to get a juvie calvus and have it fighting over shells with the multis.
