Discus laying eggs! Videos~!

Patience Zig, patience. How old are they?

I raised them both since they were about a quarter size... I got the male first and he was bigger, so I thought he was older, but the female grew faster than he did, and is now bigger than him.

I have had them both for about a year, maybe 14 months...

I didnt think they would lay eggs till about 18 months so this has been a suprise..

I havent seen the male make any attempt to fertilize the eggs.. but he acts all wierd and stuff around the female, so maybe he isnt ready yet.. I dont know, but I have a few empty 40 gal breeders I can set up for them if needed... hopefully!

They can spawn as early as 9 months old. The females get ready way ahead of the males. Give him more time to mature and get things right. There are many, many breeding discus that eat eggs. That is why you even see wire mesh around breeders discus cones. It prevents them from getting their mouths on them, but yet they can fan them. If you truly want to raise a batch of discus, my suggestion would be to put them in a barebottom separate tank together where there are no other distractions during mating. You'll need a cone or a upside down flower pot for them to spawn on. Though they may choose the heater, filter intake or glass sides of the tank. If you're ever interested in a discus cone, I have a brand new one, came with one of my orders from a breeder. I have no intention of every raising any discus so it sits in the box unused forever. You can have it for the shipping cost.

Congratulations Zig

stay away from dark slate as it transfer to much heat will cooks the eggs. two terracotta pots I want to say 4" and 2" stacked upside down on top of each other will make a quick and cheap spawning cone under $1.50.

Are you sure it was the male who ate them, its usually the female that will eat the eggs.

ps they could spawn again in a week or less

I am pretty sure my Marlboro red is a male.. But I could be wrong.
I say i think he is a male because the tip of his top fin comes to a point near his tail fin, and the females fin is round there..

I tossed a 6" terra cotta pot in my 125 the other day, but I think it just spooked them.. I havent changed the tank in a while so this was alien to them.

So...

How often do they lay eggs?
i heard they can spawn about every 4-5 days? Is this right?
and it only takes 3-4 days for them to hatch?

Does the male IMMEDIATELY fertilize them? can you see the sperm when he does it?
My alleged male was acting like he was doing it, but I didnt dee anything happening, and didnt see his ovipostual thing...

Mine laid eggs about once every 7-9 days....for months, and months non-stop! More than 1 female too. Talk about a tank full of hormones! Sheesh! Takes 3-4 days to hatch. The male makes his rounds over the eggs immediately after she lays some, they continue that way until they are finished. I only had one pair that I finally got wrigglers from. The others were repeatedly eaten.

Congrats Zig! I hate when mine spawn in the corner like that because they always manage to get the egg plaque too high and I can't do water changes. lol
