Distichodus decemmaculatus

I would really like to get these fish. Where are you going to buy them? I can try to get them through a breeder that buys wild fish directly from Africa. He mostly buys cichlids, but I have seen him selling the dist. sex. So maybe I can buy them from him? or if you know someone or store...

I could not find any other picture of this fish on the internet. Im thinking the picture is angled and not the true picture of this Fish. I think the body of this is not as slim as pictured, but rounder like the affini.

they look awfully small and not of similar body shape than the other Distichodus. Not a fish I would be interested in and I could not have them in with the bigger fish I listed the other day.

A bit late, but here is a fairly good picture of a D. decemmaculatus, scanned out of the first volume of the Baensch atlas:

I will try and take a picture of my own, but have to wait until it's after dark so that I don't get any reflections from outside in the glass of the tank.

They are excellent fish, with fine, brassy colors and good, rounded body shapes under well-maintained conditions. As noted, however, they only get to be 3" long, and thus would not be good tankmates for the largest of cichlids. With angels, festiva, etc. they ought to be fine, however.

Tolen: are these guys similiar shaped as the affinis, only smaller? or are their bodies more mainstreamed (not as round) the picture looks like it is angled...where can you buy them?

D. affinis, same source (Baensch vol. 1):

I think that D. affinis is slightly higher-bodied and fuller at the back than D. decemmaculatus, as a comparison of the two pictures I have posted will, I believe, indicate. From my observations of the fish that I own and those that I have seen in the stores, these pictures are fairly representative of what the fish look like.

As to where they come from, I purchased mine from a local fish store in Renton, WA (Fish Gallery and Pets) which has a generally good variety of fishes and clearly orders in "interesting" species because they have an established clientele who come by regularly looking for "finds", and buy them when they show up.

How much did they cost? The lfs where I got the affninis were selling at 6.00 each. If i do order it through the LFS, do you think I could get 5 to fit in my 20 gallon tank with a few petricolas? thanks...

Holy smokes, prices have come down. I've had mine for two years now, but I paid $34.99 apiece. Maybe that's why they were available in the first place...

The next time I get over to Renton, I'll check and see which species they have and what they're charging.
