Ok Im going to be making a stand for my 180g tank. The problem is that I will have to remove the dresser for space, but that is my TV holder... So if I make the stand for my 180 with an extra 2 feet on the end, will this work?

Im leaning towards no because if I make it 8 feet long and the tank is on the right side of the tank, the weight would be on the left side. This would make the stand not have the weight evenly distributed, causing stress fractures and pressure points in the tank AND stand.

So would that happen, or can I make this work?

Thanks for your help, Andrew.

Build the frame for the 180 stand, then the TV stand separate. then bolt them together & cover them with 'whatever' as one unit..

All the weight will be on the individual stands, but appear as one single stand..

Just a thought.

you could even leave the back open on the tv side and mount the tv on the wall (if its one of those flat ones)so no weights on the stand

Well the problem is that its not a plasma/flatscreen/hd or anything special. I just have a regular "old school" tv. lol.

Ill draw something up and upload it.

here we go! Would this work or would it put too much pressure on the right legs of the 180g?

I don't think that would work imo. But I don't know much about making stands...

Even if you dont know Id still like to hear your oppinion rather then build it then someone says no it wont work.

Thanks for your 2 cents. ;)

from a structural point, the weight of the tv will not effect the tank if you have it hanging off the stand like that...it is attached to the stand not the tank...and after all, we do tend to overbuild our stands

From a design point, I would either make a seperate stand for the tv, or make the stand longer to fit the tank and tv....closeing off the sides...adding a divider between the tank and tv...and extending the canopy over the tv...this way if you move the stand in the future, you dont have to contend with the shelf...and if you move the tv you can add another tank...
