DIY Compact Fluorescent (CFL) Strip Light Retrofit

Hey Guys where is a good place to But those Double Bulb holders on line. The only local place that has THEM WANTS $15+ each holder!!!!

Well I did this, only made a few adjustments to the plan.

Instead of using dual light sockets, I used an extension cord with two plugs on each side, and used a plug-able socket.

This thread was my inspiration though!
Thanks for making it!

That COuld work - just gota figure out a way to mount them

I used this thread as a guide to retrofit my stock lighting on my 20long. I had most of the supplies already. Just got two single sockets, the zip ties, and spray paint. Works great! I'm guessing I'm getting about 1.5wpg since I don't have the tank completely full. Both of my tanks are low-tech/low-light planted, but this diy project creates many possibilities.

I wasn't able to find the dual sockets, but at home depot they had a $5 ceiling fixture that could be stripped down for the dual socket. I got two of these because I'll probably convert my 29gal too.

Honestly the hardest part of this project for me was waiting for the paint to dry.

Great thread, Thanks!

Hey everyone, I plan on doing this for my 10g tank, I have the original hood with the flourescent tube light in it. I have a question though, is this going get to hot and possibly melt the plastic hood? Theres no vents on it.

It will get hot, but it's not going to melt the hood. If anything, the first thing to go would be the bulbs. If you are concerned, just drill some holes to act as vents, I've done that before...works well.

Ok thanks for the response! I'm going try and figure a way to attach a fan to make it look as clean as possible. What would you recommend far as bulbs for a 10g tank looking for 2.5wpg?

Definitely going to do this mod. Looks great and I want to get some live plants so this seems like a good place to start. My light fixture is only 18" long so I'll only be able to fit 2 bulbs in there and the cathode tube. I have some (but they are red) and they only have the connector for the PC power connection. On Newegg they also have some LED case lights with the same power connection...
