I made a filter like this for my first tank about 4 years ago. i was 13years old. it was the only thing running my 55gallon, it was roughly 600GPH after the 5"s of head hieght and resistance. Let me know what u guys think sense i plan on trying this again for my 30 gallon. pretty much a 3" piece of PVC stuffed with media, capped on both ends and both have 1/2" connectors allowing 1/2" vinly tubing, one inlet and the other an outlet. hooked up to a powerhead, the water is forced through all of the media...

**** good for a 3 year old!:thm:

lol my bad, i meant 13... I know it doesnt seem like much but the fact is, it worked. just wanted to know of some changes that might be need to be made cause im making another one soon for my 30gallon but it will only be about 200GPH

Looks good to me. What are you using to keep everything from getting mixed up?

last time i didnt. everything was bagged except the filter pad. so nothing really got mixed up. the way i did it, its exactly what a canister filter does, only it cost about 40bucks and thats for 700GPH

Looks great to me, my only question would be how easy is it to maintain? At some point you will need to get into it to change out carbon or clean the floss. That's a really good idea though!

Thats basically the filter design I use on my pond, but its made with two 5' sections of 4" PVC in parallel, and they're both filled completely with lava rock for biofiltration. I need to add some sort of mech filtration component this spring, but its going to be external to the biofilter for ease of cleaning.

I am thinking of making a similar setup for my turtle tank. What powerhead did you use? I mean what strength was it? I need something powerful enough to raise water up about 2 feet into a sealed 5 gallon bucket...
