DIY fluidized bed filter Build

ill post some tommarow right now just waiting on the parts to get here ie: bulkheads water pump tubing. should all be here tommarow or friday
 
i could be totally wrong here but i think polycarbonate adhesive is usually what's used on lexan. (methylene chloride) i'm sure you'll get a water tight seal with the silicone but not sure how long once it's under pressure from the pump.

i could be totally lost though...
 
Lexan has different properties than acrylic. Lowes sells silicone all the time "designed" for Lexan, but then again..... I work retail so I know marketing gimmicks.

Judging from the pics I'd say you should be fine.

Do keep us updates, I'ld love to see this thing.

I've tried silicone with both plexiglass and lexan...I sure wouldn't trust it. Have you ever tried to pull apart two pieces of glass siliconed together? Its very difficult. Two pieces of lexan or plexi on the other hand...not too hard to separate the bond. You'd be much better off with weld-on.

In any case, looking forward to the rest of the build to see how it turns out.
 
i apologize fishkeepermedic... apparently ge (makers of lexan) recommends ge silicone 2 for lexan adhesion. kinda makes me wonder why they sell special silicone caulk made for polycarbonate.

cory keeper... i worked at home depot long enough to second guess "the experts" that work there myself. so i definitely know where you're coming from with marketing gimmicks. besides all the lowes employees around here were trained at the home depot training facility... and then offered more money by lowes. :raspberry:

anyway, sorry for bothering you on your build thread. :worthy: accept my apology? :o i do want to see how it turns out though. :popcorn:
 
Of course i accept your appollogy i will keep you all updated just on hold with the build till i get my parts and pump

Umm, did you sand the lexan before you put the silicone? If not, sorry bud, the glass guys are wrong. It won't be long before it peels off. It may bond to lexan that isn't underwater for a long time, but once it is wet it will start working free.
 
And if you use GE Silicon II on it for contact with water, you've made another huge error. Silicon II contains anti-mildew chemicals that ARE toxic to aquatic animals.
