DIY Frozen Fish Food

well I got the green goo all made up and it's setting in the fidge. it was real easy. here is the final recipe:
one jumbo smelt (9" fish)
7 large shrimps
about 1/2 cup mixed seafood
2/3 pound of peas
10 sheets of nori (hydrated beforehand)
1 cup broccoli
one spoonfull of garlic

I threw all this in the food processor for about 6 minutes until it was paste
put 1/2 cup cold water in mixing bowl with entire package of gelatin
boiled one cup of water and mixed it with cold water/gelatin until everything dissolved. Then I started dumping the green nasty in, one big scoop at a time. Between scoops I mixed it up real well. I got some ziplock sandwich bags and scooped 1 cup into each bag. It made 6 cups of food. I squeezed the air out of the bag, sealed it, rinsed it off under running water and then threw it into the fridge. Before I go to bed I will toss them into the freezer.

that's it, I will give it a try...i remember somewhere that you can get spriulina powder at local stores??

I got mine at the local traditional/alternative medicine/health store - 100% pure spirulina powder with no other vitamins or minerals.

Great to see how many kewl new creative recipes this thread has sparked! Keep it up peeps and be sure to post your observations & results too! :)

Ninja- I fed the fish tonight. The fish were kinda suspect at first. Some of the pearl gouramis figured out it tasted good and went nuts. Other pearls ate a little and spit some out. The swords ate everything they could get there mouths on. I dropped some in my goldfish tank and lets just say it didn't even have time to get to the bottom! This batch had lots of green in it and both the swordtails and goldfish loved it (and they like plant matter inthe wild). The pearl's are a divided group right now...I will keep you posted. If I had to do it over for my pearls I would add less veggies and more fish/shrimp and probably some pellets. Oh yeah and at LEAST 10% ash...lol

Oh yeah, never go the spirulina I went with nori instead. I think that nori is the bomb also. Extremely high in vitamins and minerals.

lousybreed thats really awesome man! Creative mix you have there! Sounds like you had a lot of fun making it and I'm glad your fishies seem to like it too! :)

My pearls are pretty adept at removing the shrimp from the mix whilst leaving the veggies for the kribs and bottom feeders - took them a while to get used to it but they do get their fair share! They also tend to sneak to the bottom and pick on the leftovers when nobodies watching! :)

It's a hit with my Malawi's too. Even the bumblebees get a bite or 2 and they usually too fussy to go for anything thats not alive and kicking!

I also alternate between DIY food and flakes just to make sure they don't get too used to the green goooooo... don't want them getting too used to luxury else they'll form a union or something and start demanding! lol

That cracks me up! Ninja with no carbs, do you think the superfood is unbalanced. I was just thinking about that last night. Maybe add oatmeal or pellets...Whadda think guys?

A little update...I fed my fish the superfood and the pearls are warming up to it. This time every fish ate it and some were feasting beasts! This mix really works good for almost all fish...I would recommend that any serious aquarist make this food ASAP. My pearls have REALLY colored up since I started feeding the superfood.

This is great info; thanks for posting!

By the way, you can get spirulina powder at places like GNC that carry vitamins and bodybuilder's supplements.
