DIY Rimless Tank Project

So far, the tank has been sitting filled for 4 days in the garage. There has been zero leakage.

I'm gonna start building the stand here in a minute or two, after the football game ends.

Good Luck and i guess you are not watching SNF: Pats vs Colts. I think/hope this will be exciting one to watch.

Oh, I'm watching SNF. :) Wouldn't miss it.

Alright, so - design ideas.

Here are some really quick 3D mock-ups. Let's get some comments to help me improve the design!

Straight on.

Color scheme options. I'm looking at stained wood, here. The darker color is a Red Oak stain, and the lighter is just an English Oak stain. I'll have to do actual test swatches with the stain on the wood that I'll be using to get an idea of what they'll actually look like, but these are just a starting idea.

And finally, here is a view that shows a sense of scale. The pedestal is not mean to be a stand-alone floor unit. It's meant to go on top of another piece of furniture, like a dining room buffet or a desk.

I was also considering going with a more modern scheme, something like this:

Black and white scheme. This would be black paint and white paint on the trim.

This is same design, but with Red Oak stain instead of black paint. I'm leaning toward this design. I really like the Red Oak stain!

Red Oak stain again, but other side.

And once again, for scale with the modern motif.

ALRIGHT! That's all. Sorry for the image overload. Opinions! I need opinions, please. :)

nice job so far. looks like a great project.

I'd like to chime in about the foam... I had a piece of foam under a 15 gallon tank, thinking it would level it out, but in fact, it compressed under the low side more than under the high side, since there was more force there, and the foam ended up making the tank more out of level than without. I wouldn't use foam again myself.

I also like this one the best. But I would not make the horizontal bars white. I would stain them a lighter natural wood color, one that looks nice against the red oak. Or just paint them with a clear sealant if the wood is already a good color on its own. The you still have the modern look, but with warm, natural colors. Just my personal preference. :)

I think the tank should be placed on a solid surface withought anything playing into how it rests.. I would some how work adjustable feet or something into allowing you to make the surface nice and level since twist and leaning is what you want to avoid running a seemless tank.. most stress comes from a twisting tank.. I never move one with weight in it.. definatly not good for the silicone.

I use these on my steel frames that I make for my setups.

I'm with ya. I think that would look great. Maybe like a golden walnut color or something. Thanks!

This is also a great idea. What do they attach to on your stand? Just screw directly into the metal? How could I attach these to a 2x wood frame?

Alright, slightly altered design. I've decided to go with a DIY light hood as well, suspended by some kind of metal bars. Because of this, I feel that it's a better fit for the modern motif, so I fleshed out that design a little more. I went with a golden pine stain for the slats, with the red oak background. I also shrunk down the stand a few inches. Right now it's at 12" to allow for the clearance for the canister filter.

Now, I've never done a DIY light before...so we'll see how that goes (failure, lol). We'll cross that bridge when we get there, haha.

For now, some updated shots:

Does the base need to shrink another 2 inches?
