DIY sponge filter with pictures!

Nice DIY but I wouldn't rely on silicone to hold on pvc . I would just use pvc glue. It might not matter on this small of a project but just wanted to bring it up. I have had disasters in the past trying to use silicone on plastics :( :)
 
actually with this project, you are going to be sucking on the cap, so you really don't need any glue at all on the cap, just push it on.

I wouldn't dare use PVC glue in this application because of the possibility of toxicity. BGC is correct, you don't really NEED to silicone the caps on but if you're going to be moving them around or storing them for later use, I say it's better safe than sorry.
 
i use pvc glue on my tanks plumbing and havent had any problems.

PVC can be used for potable water lines - therefore the PVC cement/purple primer must also be safe for potable water when cured. I've used it all over the place in my tanks, if its safe enough to drink through, the fish will be fine.

Ditto, make sure to use the correct pvc(white) for potable water
 
I don't even bother to glue my pvc together as it is very close tolerances. They fit very snug and allows me to take it apart for cleaning. If they should loosen, I simply rough up one piece to make it snug again. I cement only the parts that need to be permanent and leak-free. Sploke is correct that when dry, PVC Cement is non-toxic.
 
Live and learn. This was meant to be an inexpensive DIY. If you have PVC glue, use it. If you don't have that but you do have silicone, use that. If you have neither, don't use anything at all. I had this stuff laying around the house so it essentially cost me nothing to put it together, just used things I had leftover from previous projects. I did the recon at Lowes and the internet to get a roundabout price for this project.
 
I know this is an old DIY but what size pipe would I need for a 70 gal tank???? Also what size air pump??? I am going to build one of these tomorrow for my SW tank, it will be used as a secondary filtrartion device since I already have a Bio wheel 350, any response "qucikly" would be very useful and helpful!!!!!! Thanks
