Do 40 watt 30inch bulbs exist?

Ok for lights, If i were to get a glass hood, would you guys suggest the two hood thing, or would you suggest something else. MAybe the double light fixtured would work now?

Co2- So basically pressurized co2 is better, but more expensive, but the hagen system is cheaper but not as good. right? As of now, i dont have a lot of money (high school student) so i'm looking at the hagen system. Instead of buying the refil packs, i can make homemade co2 (like you said here http://www.thekrib.com/Plants/CO2/co2-narten.html)
right?

THANKS!!!

I would go with the glass hood and double light fixture.

Because money is an issue,I would not buy the Hagen CO2,and just use an empty 2 litre and build your own with the instuctions that are linked. That should save you some money for lighting.I have never done DIY CO2,but I am pretty sure you can do it for less than $30.
Because it looks like you are going to go with the DIY CO2,I would also use Flourish Excel,http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=4656

ok well for preassurized co2, i already have some 8oz tanks lying around could that be a start for the set-up? I just dont want to be spending $170 on co2 set ups. OR would the DIY 2 litre thing be ok?

Yes DIY should be fine, lots of people do it.I would just make sure to add the Excel, because if you want to have 2wpg of lighting,I am not sure in such a shallow tank that you will not end up with an algae farm.

By the sound of your user name,I take it you are into paintball.I have a 10 gallon tank that uses paintball bottles. But again you are looking at a large price tag for the regulator, reactor, and drop checker.http://www.marinedepot.com/ps_ViewI...ucts-Saltwater_Aquarium_Supplies~vendor~.html

hahahaha yes i am sort of into paintball. Whenever i have extra money, thats what i do! Anyway, yeah, i think that the preassurized is a little out of price range. you think with the excel, DIY bottle co2, and 40 watt lighting, i wont get an algae farm or will i? i got confused when you said that.

oh and ya know the DIY system i was talking about thats at petsmart? well could i just put the homemade formula in that system instead of using the packets? That way i could just buy the system and not have to worry about the refil packs?

Thanks

30" bulbs don't exist as far as I know. If they do, they aren't in any of the common brand fixtures.
If that is true than you would never be able to find lights for a 20 long...the standard CFL's for this size are 17w.

My suggestion is to get the double-tube strip (AGA has one I believe) which gives you 34w over 20 gallons, or 1.7 wpg. That is enough light IME.

The problem is that some people say that double tubed lights won't work well with my hood....is that true?

2wpg over a tank as shallow as a 20 long is a lot of light. The stronger light you have, the more CO2 you need. The CO2 will make the plants grow faster and out compete the algae for nutrients. This is why keeping plants should keep algae at a minimum.
I just think that 2wpg in a 20 long maybe too much without pressurized CO2.
Like Jpappy said,1.7 wpg will be plenty enough to grow plants.

You would need a new fixture...just the strip over a glass top works, unless you really want to keep using the hood.
