DO I have enough oxygen

Please do an additional water change, the fish will be okay with it provided you keep the temp of replacement water close to tank temp. What is the temp on your tank by the way? I would stay away from the meds until the illness is diagnosed. Be sure to check/post your pre change and post change water parameters. Thanks.

I am guessing that you added Melafix to the tank because you were concerned with the new fish being sick or spreading sickness to your other fish. I would strongly recommend setting up a quarantine tank for new fish. This way you will not have to worry when you add fish to your main tank because you have been watching them for a couple weeks in the Q-tank and you know they are healthy or have been able to treat them for any sicknesses they might have.

As I understand it, Melafix will kill your beneficial bacteria while trying to take out any disease causing bacteria. You should use a q-tank any time you need to treat with Melafix if that is the road you take. If you want to actively take it out of the water instead of just getting some of it with changes, throw an activated carbon pack into your HOB.

Yup that is the main reason for using the Melafix. I would setup my 10g as a QT but I don't have anyplace to put it. WHen I move then I will as I will also be purchasing at least a 55g tank. I also don't plan to add any more fish to this tank and so I was not concerned about a QT right now. My hope is that if I take care of this tank I won't have to worry about sickness in my fish.

By the way the fish also seem to be doing alot better now that I did the above. One thing though, will it hurt my plants to keep the Air strip on all the time? Thanks again for the help.

Melafix is not going to keep your fish from being sick if you introduce new ones that are carrying parasites or bacterial infections.

You shouldn't run the air with plants. It's a temporary measure until you get all the Melafix out of the tank.

I thought melafix was to help repair any damage that may have happened during netting?

I have never added anything to my angel tanks when they get fin damage..I just make sure the water is clean with good readings..the fins can and do repair themselves.

Exactly.

IMO people are too quick to add meds to their tanks. Bacteria and virii DO mutate and develop resistance to drugs. THe more you throw in there, the better the chance they will become resistant to it.

Eventually you will run out of options.

Just my 2 cents.

Ok I am starting to learn alittle more now. I thought that Melafix was a natrual Med. Meaning I thought it was made out of Tea Leaf Oil and that it would only help vs hurting. I was under the impression that it wouldn't hurt anything in the tank and was safe to use on a normal basis. Is it then really safe to use if fish are sick or is just doing good water changes a better idea? Today all my fish seem to be doing better. I have not added anymore Melafix and have done a water change. I also put in a carbon filter just to be sure it gets all the Melafix out of the water. Thanks again for the help.
