Do your corydoras recognize you?

I mentioned to a guest that if my corydoras begged for food while he was watching them that he should not feed them. When I asked later if they were behaving themselves he said that the fish had paid no heed to him while he was watching them. When I observe them around feeding time though they seem to gather in the usual feeding spot while furiously swimming around or checking the top and bottom of the tank for food. We were wondering why they ignored the non-regular visitor and it was mentioned that they might not have recognized the new guy. My initial thoughts were that they were probably just not expecting a feeding session earlier in the day. This is kind of cool because it has only been after a few months that the corydoras seem calm enough to let me get close to them without them scurrying away. Anyway, has anyone made any observations about corydoras expressing their desire for a meal or being able to tell the difference between people (which I doubt they can)?

Well, I think cory's can recognize people. I'm the tank cleaner, my wife is the fish feeder. Manny, Moe & Jack (the albino's) ignore me but come to the front of the tank when my wife walks by. Doesn't have to be feeding time either - they see her, they go into the food dance.

Today I dropped by very briefly during the day well before feeding time and they were doing what appears to be their mid-morning routine which seems to be just parking somewhere in the tank in pairs or larger groups and not moving. Kind of interesting in its own way. They did not start doing the feed-me dance. With that said I did not stick around for too long so they may not have clued in to me being there. Maybe I'll try dropping in early and trying to get their attention to see what happens.

^_^

Of course they do!
Every time I sit near my 5gal, my bichir comes out and does the food dance and will sit and watch me, but it won't do it for anyone else.
And my glass cats hate my boyfriend because he accidentally dropped the top for the tank into the tank...twice...they flip out when they see him, now.
Of course, if someone with a similar body shape went near the tank, they might do that, too...I don't know how well they can see...

I tried again. I showed up they went crazy thaen I took off. Someone else went down and they just went about their business. I went down shortly after that and they did not seem too excited. Maybe they were ticked off that I did not feed them the earlier time. I'm not coming up ith anything conclusive but it is fun to get other people involved in the "experiment". Calico Goat, I was think that it may be generic body shape or something too hard to say for sure though.

I don't think my cories recognize me yet...they just scurry away when I try to look at them. Well, they look for food more energetically when it's feeding time though, so I guess they know the schedule already.

:OT: BUT...........

How can you keep a bichir in a 5gallon??

You sure he isnt doing the let me out of this small tank dance? For a fish that can grow 12" long plus being in there with a pleco that is a very tight fit. I dont think theres any bichir that can be in that small of a tank. You should consider getting rid of him and getting a different fish unless you plan on getting a bigger tank fairly soon.

It's a LITTLE bichir (about 3") and a similarly dwarfed pleco (1.5"), but yeah, I have a terraruim of about 60 gallons that I have ...plans for. And no, it's the food dance because my mother had goldfish that would do the Let Me Out of Here dance, it's a little different.
