It's not a matter of terminology. "Pregnant" implies that eggs or fry are developing in the female; this doesn't happen in egglayers. There is therefore no stage which can remotely be called "pregnant", unless you also use the term to describe human females between ovulation and menstruation every month.
That's why I raise it. I think that using the word invites a misunderstanding of fish reproduction.
Consider birds. Birds mate, the eggs start to develop in the female, and she later lays them. I can imagine why you might call the stage between mating and laying the eggs "pregnant". Using the term of fishes invites the misunderstanding that they reproduce the same way. They don't. There is no period between mating and laying eggs; the two are the same thing in fish.
The Barbs that I have look exactly like that. They have been the way for as long as I can remember. Never had a problem with them, they are healthy and happy. That's how barbs are supposed to be FAT!
