"The system of vetting adults who work with children was introduced in 2002 in the aftermath of the horrific abduction and murder of two schoolgirls in Soham. But most parents still don't realise that it has since expanded arbitrarily and can encompass virtually any adult who wishes to come in to contact with children.

So if you are not licensed by the CRB, don't be surprised if you are discouraged from attending your child's activities. What astonished Alka was that so many parents have come to accept such intrusive vetting as a fact of life. "

I know, I have had to have my background checks every year. Not only do I have them once, twice, or three times, But by the time all is said and done, I Have had my background run 4 times every year. I assume That I accept this responsibility because I love volunteering. However, I never realized, that I Get a check to coach cheer leading, one for each child's class, and once for hosting the holiday parties at the F.O.E.
I don't know How I feel about people not willing to accept the fact either. I get these clearances every year. I have to take CPR , and clinics for basic child care.
I guess IMHO if I can do all this. They can fill out a paper and send it in.

What do you think?

I will attend my children's events without a freaking background check... I am a veteran of the US armed forces, i have a SECURITY clearance, and if they need any more, i will tell them where to look (a VERY dark place)

That's in the UK not here in the US.

They still do similar things to this in the US. As I mentioned, I have to have mine done 4 times a year.

i think it's a tad excessive.

I think, in todays society It is almost needed though. I am talking more so people who volunteer though, not families attending school functions.

I've never heard of them doing this to parents in the US.

You don't have to have clearances to volunteer in your child's class?
I have to fill out a new form if I intend to volunteer in the class, or on field trips. Everyone who intends to volunteer in our school district has to.

Even though i still hold my security clearance from the Army, i would still have to go through a background check, fact is, i'm a civilian now.....and to be honest, if its is in the best interests and safety of our children, i would happily do it....But, thats just me...

I guess, I feel like the fact that I don't have to pay for it( 4 times, i think, i would willingly pay once a year.), and the fact that It sets parents minds at ease, I am willing to do it.
If I found out the person in my child's classroom escorting them to the bathroom, on walks in the hall, ect ect, did not have these, it would upset me. I don't know the person from Adam, and if i expect the teachers to do it, i expect other people allowed to be in close proximity with my child to do it.
