I know this is the fish forum but so many people here own doggies so maybe you can help. My German Sheppard /Husky / Lab is having really bad diarrhea. I have no idea the cause but Wednesday he did get ahold of a small bottle of massage oil and drank maybe a 1/4 of it so maybe that's it. However now it's Sunday and it hasn't stopped. The stuff is a water solution so I don't understand how that would make him sick.

Saturday morning he woke me up at 6am, then 8am, and then 10am he whined once and let it loose on the floor. I was pretty upset and have a really bad time cleaning that stuff up. I should have taken him to the Vet then but all of a sudden it was getting solid again around noon so I decided against it. Now this morning around 3am my gf got up to use the restroom (Shes been sick too with a spring cold or something) and he got up with her and just went on the floor again!!! :wall: I didn't have any pet cleaning stuff so I had to go to Meijer and pick some up. I'm just staying up now watching the dog in hopes when my gf gets up I can get the lost sleep back.

Almost everytime he goes out he gets some out but then keeps trying to get more like he is constipated. He's having trouble eatting his whole bowl of food. I've had to get a treat and then bury in the bowl so has to eat to find it. I have been making him drink a lot of water to stay hydrated. I read on a site that I should take a day to fast him and just give him lots of water so I'm going to try that to see if that helps his system out. He isn't running a fever and he seems ok, of course he knows he's having troubles but he's aware and still plays with the other dogs here. I would take him to the Vet but of course they are closed on Sundays... So I get yet another rough night before I can take him... sigh.

I bred dogs and raised puppies for years, so I have a bit of experience with the diarrhea. Do not force the dog to eat. You may need to take him to the vet to find the real cause of the problem, but in the meantime, his intestines need a rest = usually 24 hours with no food, but plenty of water when he will take it. Then feed small amounts at a time, a couple times a day if they are hungry, a mixture of very, very lean ground beef, cooked very well done and drained on paper towels, mixed with some cooked white rice. This is very gentle on the digestive system. No doggie treats until the stools are back to normal too. As long as I knew the dogs didn't ingest anything dangerous, I used this routine for 3 for adult dogs for days. Puppies go gravely downhill with diarhea very, very quickly. If the diarrhea didn't subside by then, it was vet trip time. Keeping them hydrated is very important, just as in people. Hope this heps. Good luck with the dog, it's very distressing when they are sick. One of mine was very ill recently from a tick bite, so I know the worry!

Wish you the best for a speedy recovery on your pet! Once their tummy is upset, it seems endless.

I agree with the 24 hour food fast. Then maybe for a day give him small amounts of browned hamburger meat with rice. That has been what my vet has always recommended as one of my dogs is a garbage digger. :wall: Then slowly start introducing his food back, mixed with hamburger and rice. If the diarrhea is still going on, then he needs a vet. If his energy level goes down and he's acting sick besides just diarrhea, take him to the vet now. Good luck. Doggie diarrhea is awful.

I second this.
I have also breed and raised dogs for a few years. If this doesn't work, I would take him to a vet. Its never failed for me when I have used this routine, and its due to something non toxic that has been ingested. I also want to ask, If you know what the oil contains, so you can be sure it was completely non toxic. You can call the manufacturer. ( usually a number listed on the bottle)

In addition to the fasting you can give regular Pepto tablets, 1/4 of a tab per 20 lbs bodyweight every 6-8 hours, you can also give Peidolite (probably spelled that wrong) in place of water to keep him hydrated you can get this at a drug store. If the symptoms last more than 2 days you should take him to the vets.

I should have also stated that you can not give Pepto to cats, it contains asprin that cats just can not tollerate. If your dog starts vommiting and running a fever, you should take him to the vets as these are signs of Pancreitis.

i would be concerned that he may have ingested a foreign body. Does he routinely eat things like massage oil? If he is straining to defecate and not improving, its possible he has a blockage in his intestines. If it was my dog, i would take him to the vet since its been 4 days.

He eats so much stupid crap it's funny but annoying at times. The oil was the last thing he did eat and it's non toxic. I've been taking him out ever 1-2 hours strait since I've posted this. I'm annoyed cause I've gotten no sleep and he sees this. Thing is I know he's sick so I'm trying to help. When I offered water and asked him to come look he peed all over the carpet. He still has a puppy exciteable bladder so when I come home and he's happy to see me or when he thinks hes in trouble he pees on the floor. *sigh* this day is getting worse and worse. He's only 1 year and 4months... I should have mentioned that.

It's hard for me to take him to the Vet because I simply can't afford it. It's my last choice. I'm going to try the fasting today and then I guess the hamburger and rice tommorow. I'm assuming you give the meat raw and the rice cooked?
