Don't throw out that old incandesant light hood.

For those who don't have a Lowes: http://www.1000bulbs.com/category.php?category=2086

I was going to do this same thing but decided I didn't like the idea of squeezing the bulbs into such a tight space. I have the full All-Glass hood and the bulbs would actually be sandwiched in contact with my glass lid and the hood reflector.

Mine is the same way, actually did a test run on them earlier by letting them run in there for 3 hours and neither the top of the hood nor the glass underneath felt nearly as hot as they did when I just ran the regular incadesant lights for them, you should seriously give it a shot, makes the tank look oh so bright!

I have the All-Glass also. The bulb I found fits the narrow reflector with clearance all the way around. You're right about the usual CF's, they don't fit.

I found one of the spirals laying around the house and tried it on my 10 gal too, wow, what a difference. It was a 14W bulb, I'm going to try and find the GE one at walmart and give it a whirl. I wonder if I can grow glosso in my 10 gal using those 26W ones :)

A picture is worth a thousand words!
Cf bulb next to the old bulb, notice the narrow base and spiral. CF replaces this bulb.

Great! I knew I should have put a pic up with the first post!

Too late for me. I ordered 2 13W kits from ahsupply.com this weekend. Hopefully it will be money well splurged!

for my 20 long, i ahve two incandescent hoods. one is made for 2.5 gallon and the other is for a 10 gallon. i use 3 compact fluorescent bulbs at 5500k. plant growth is very very good. in fact, the rangeri sword has formed 2plantlets under this light with only planttabs as a supplement. however, i would use them for tanks higher than 12 inches...
i found the bulbs at home depot- 4 dollars each!
