Ok, supposing that you had a 40L just sitting around and you were thinking about what species of medium sized cichlid would go perfectly with this setup. Now this cichlid would be a loner with good color and personality. It would react favorably to it's owner and wouldn't make too much of a mess out of it's surroundings. What would be your DREAM TANK CICHLID?

40L excludes you from most of the cichlids which are renowned for the characteristic of interaction with owner, however all cichlids to some extend possess this. Cichlids in general are messy fish btw so that knocks out another criteria.

With that size tank you are basically looking at rams, kribensis, apistogramma species or tanganyikan shell dwellers. For some reason I feel you would enjoy an apistogramma - they are spunky little guys and very colourful. You could have some other fish in there too, maybe rasporas or other small schoolers. Do some reading on the apistogrammas; they're great fish.

:iagree: 40 l is too small for any medium cichild..you are looking at dwarf cichlids and even some of those a 40l would be bare minimum for a single.

maybe apisto's but these are dwarves not medium sized.

I'm dreaming of just a single cichlid, all by itself. Sort of like a buddy that would have the entire tank to himself, not have to fight for food, space, etc. Thinking of something different, off the wall, new to the hobby, etc. Might keep some kind of dither fish with him, depending on the fish and it's temperment. Sort of like an Oscar in a larger tank, but on a smaller scale. Fish that come to mind are like a Firemouth or a Salvini or a Jewel cichlid. I think it could be done, with 4 feet of linear space to roam. Thoughts?

Are you talking a 40 liter tank, or a 40 gallon long? Big difference...

Its a 40 gallon long tank. Sorry, I am used to going by the way they are labeled when bought (40L). Dimensions are 48"x12"x15", basically looks like a half of a 55 gallon tank.
