dropsy question

I actually just read about the epsom salt. Although I am always hesitant to add salt as an illness treatment is would seem logical to reduce the swelling. In the past I have used a super fine syringe to draw fluid off of a betta with dropsy. It seemed to help the fish for awhile, but I could never get rid of the core condition. Perhaps the salt would be an easier way to buy some time?

Using the syringe is probably faster relief, but not something I would be brave enough to do myself.

I would really like to know what I am doing wrong. I love my bettas dearly and I want to stop/prevent this happening in the future!

It's not really if they all get dropsy, if you're getting them from walmart than they probably have unhealthy stock. (Of course, I've never been in a walmart and never will be, but from what I've heard bait shops with dead fish have healthier stock than them.LOL) You should try a different store if possible, or buy online. Dropsy can also be caused by poor water conditions if I’m not mistaken, which could potentially be from the store. How often do you do water changes and what are you feeding your bettas? It can also be caused by low-quality foods with a lot of fillers in them I believe.

Well I understand she didn't live in pristine conditons. I don't make a habit of buying fish there. She caught my eye one week and two weeks later she was still there, looking less than healthy. I guess pity got the better of me. She's been perfect until this point though.
I posted my tank stats/habits in an earlier post.

I'm so sorry your little girl is not getting better. I don't blame you for rescuing her. Even if she doesn't make it, and I wouldn't give up yet, she has had a better life with you for the time that you've had her.

Thanks for everyone's help. I lost my girl yesterday. She had started to eat again, but in the end i don't think I ever got rid of the main issue. I really appriciate all the help and support, though.
