Are GloFish Danios natural?
Lol...You all probably think I'm crazy!

But.... I saw a thread on here about fish being dyed and tattooed and things like that. So it just got me wondering about those cute little things. I've been thinking about setting up a tank with them and some black gravel with a black light. But I'm not going to do it if they're dyed!

They are not dyed. I'm sure not all my technicalities are correct but they take something from coral and add it to the danios to get the coloration and black light effect.

i thought it was like messing with the coral and genetics

Like Fastfly said, they're genetically altered. Their offspring will have the glo traits. The fish aren't subjected to cruel practices like dying or tattooing.

Ohhh Ok!
That makes me feel better! Thank you guys!

Now tell me what you think of my little ideas...

I'm gonna get a tank. Add black gravel with a few colored pieces in it.. add a black light. A few plants, may go with fake for this.. I'm not sure yet. And then add a few Danios! If I wanted to go with.. let's say 8 Danios... What size tank would you reccomend? And how would real plants (anacharis, java fern) do with a black light...?? Hmm. Probably not too good??

I would go for a 20g long since danios are very active little fish. You could keep 12 or so in a 20g long. Idk if plants would survive under blacklight.

I think the balcklight would be harmful to the fish...at least I remember reading that somewhere on AC

You are probably most familiar with the blacklight tubes and bulbs found in general retail stores. These are available at Home Depot and other lighting stores and often, during Halloween, at department stores. However, these are not industrial (theater) grade lamps. Low wattage---and therefore, short throw distances---make them almost useless. Most of their energy is spent in heat and the filaments produce very little of the UV spectrum.
