they're hideous and deformed, and people actually PRIZE these debilitating, ugly mutations

You want to see something mammalian that IMHO worse than those fish?
Referring to the blood parrots, not the goldfish. I don't care much for lionheads and bubbles, they're monstrosities, imho.

Feline daschunds. Not bred for any purpose, such as the canine version were, but just because they could and because they're "cute". A so-called "natural mutation".

ROAN- I wonder if they require the same back surgery as Dachunds?...
Yes, they do. Apparently they are prone to the same genetic problems. Poor wee things.

MKML- What you just described is the very thing I cull...Interesting, I cull those fish, others sell them for 20 bucks :) I am a very light culler and ONLY cull betta fry with the type of deformities you described...

I know it's sad isn't it. I have seen some blood parrots in LFS that aren't quiet as deformed as mine and others even worse off. I can't fathom why they are intentionally bred. I mean yes they can be cute but there are much prettier natural fish out there. I understand the necessity of culling. I breed chickens and know that it is a necissary evil although I only cull in the situation of hatch deformities. After owning these guys and watching them I do find a certain sadness in their creation. I would never buy or suggest someone buying one. I am attached to mine and will do every thing to keep them in the best environment and health. Imagine after leaving your baby hood if your mouth grew into a frozen position and remained that way for the rest of your life. We would feel so bad for that person with that defect, yet some willingly breed fish to suffer it.

Psst Roan- Love the new avatar!! I STILL have to read "Rainbow Fish" to my daughter! :)

ewwwww. Those fish haven't just been tortured, they've become unbearably tacky! Who would want something that flamboyantly ugly in a tank... if you're going to torture a fish and dye it (wrong anyways) at least use a decent color scheme...

The color scheme looks exactly lika Costa Rica's flag. It's not ugly.

The dying of fishes should be punished by law. People who do that is terribly cruel. I can compare it to a man who cutted a dog's legs because leg-less dog are cool. Terrible.

Why isn't PETA all over this? I mean they should be. Say no to dyed fish.
Don't go there!

Peta has different ideas about keeping fish as opposed to you or I, they believe in the practice of NOT KEEPING FISH AT ALL , so I don't think it is wise to ask them to do something about this when all this kind of practice does is hurt out hobbie that we love so much. Say no by not buying.

actually, PETA believes that humans should have no depencance or interaction with ANY animal, EVER. not just fish. they want to spay and neuter domestic animals into extinction. they want everyone to be a vegetarian, not keep any pet, regardless of how incredibly perfect you keep its habitat, and not use animals for anything else we use them for.

I think that PETA should stand for People Eating Tasty Animals.

I personally think goldfish with head growths are awsome. I would like to set up a 180 gallon tank with 5 or 6 lionheads.

The reason there are parrot fish is because people buy them. Aquarists support these fish and thus there will be a market for them. Personally if I was a pet store owner I would never sell these things.....
