Some sellers seem to get away with fraud, changing their name as needed. There's a guy in IL that sells rare collector cars. A friend from Colorado flew out one-way to pick up a car that was in "drive home" condition. Not only were the photos of a completely different car, but the one he bought lacked tires, the engine was rusted into a solid block, and there were trees growing through the bumpers and hood. My friend was not happy, and had to buy another ticket to get home. Despite storms of protests from many people who have gotten "bit" this guy is still on ebay.
IME, if you are buying an item that can have something wrong with it ( musical instruments, electronics, etc ) and the seller says "It seems to work" or "I don't know nuthin about it", chances are that it will have a serious problem. You can ask questions before the sale ends, but if the seller gives vague answers they're probably hiding something. Really bad sellers trade "good" feedback, so be sure to check out what those glowing plusses actually bought. If it's a 1-cent chili recipe stay away!
