As most of us know, Eheim took over Ebo-Jagur a few months ago. Apparently it's no longer profitable for them to ship to the US, so they're exclusivly in Germany now.

My distributors have stopped getting shipments already, they say Ebo will only ship if its like a 5-year supply now (which is, I think, in the area of a few thousand heaters.)

If you want some, you can always fly to Germany

Maybe, if they order enough from Ebo at a time (assuming they don't have their own distributors.) If Big Als has their own distributors (as they likely do,) they probably won't be getting any.

Does anyone know?

May I suggest a Tronic heater?
Because they do not have a contact point on/off switch, these heaters have virtually eliminated the "fried-fish" scenario.
I have used them for years, and they keep the desired temperature within a few tenths of a degree.

I second that. I think tronics will replace ebo-jager's if what oyu say is true. only time my 55 has fluctuated more than .5 degrees is when it got really warm in my house, it was up to 81.2, but that is't the heater's fault. usually it never goes outside of 77.2-77.8, according to my digital thermometer. I accidentaly broke my super nice photography thermometer. I think it was accurate to .1 degree and dead on. *sniff*

I heard this mentioned a number of times, but I just don't believe it's true. I had a 150w Tronic that stuck in the on position. I encountered it before it cooked my fish, but the temp had risen quite high. I don't believe any brand of heater is immune to failure; Tronics may have different failure points, but mine is proof they aren't immune to sticking in the on position.

I will say I think Tronics and Ebos are the best you can get, and I don't hesitate using Tronics, but they can fail.

I also would expect that some of the big resellers -- e.g., That Pet Place -- will be able to continue to carry Ebos. They must sell quite a few....

It is certainly true that any heater can fail, and your experience has shown Tronic heaters are not immune.
I have found that the vulnerable part of submersible heaters is the place where the power cord enters the heater, because age related cracking of the sealant may cause a leak.
I use digital thermometers on my 3 tanks, which makes is easy to check the temperature at least daily.
Now that it is summertime, the heaters get a few months rest, as the temps in my tanks rarely get down to the set temperature of my heaters.

What kind do you use? I have a number of $9 Radio Shack indoor/outdoor digital thermometers that work great.

I have one of the Radio Shack indoor/outdoor digitals too. There was some debate a while back on whether or not the probe was submersible, but evidently it is, because mine has been underwater for many years and still works fine.
I also have something called a Thermo-Sensor and a Time N Temp by Lifeguard. Both of these were specifically intended for aquarium use, and they work great as well.
The Time N Temp is irritating to a degree, because the time and temp alternate on the display, but I really have no interest in the time of day.

Of course, I have an assortment of floating thermometers, a hydrometer, and those LC stick on jobs too. But digitals are great, no question about it.
