Ebo-Jagur heaters...stock up

JÄGER heaters now by EHEIM

Hi there,

I just can't believe how some people can come up with such empty facts sometimes...

Thanks to one member, I now have the opportunity to set the record straight. Eheim HAS BEEN exporting Jäger heaters to the US since they took over the company last year! In fact, you can see Jäger ads in the fish keeping magazines these days.

The EBO-Jäger heaters that were assembled in CA are no longer; worldwide production has now moved to Germany and in NO circumstance will Eheim stop producing Jäger heaters for North America. Jäger heaters are BY FAR the best in the world and I know from being a hobbyist myself that they are highly reliable. I truly think that it would be a great lost to our hobby if they were to disappear one day.

True hobbyists know that quality does matter when it comes to equipment (think about all the fish soup stories) and so does Eheim. That’s the reason why they acquired Jäger in the first place: dependability and safety. It's the perfect match! The original canister filter meets the original submersible heater. Both German, both top of the line.

If I may suggest... read about the Jäger story to learn how necessity was really the mother of this invention and how submersible heaters came to the hobby.

Let me know if I can be of any assistance in the future. Please do not hesitate to propagate the word now that you all know that Jäger heaters ARE available.

Jäger Press Release (short version)

Following the acquisition of the well known and highly regarded German heater manufacturer JÄGER in July 2002, EHEIM GmbH & Co. KG, a leading aquarium products manufacturer with sales in over 45 countries, is pleased to announce that it now owns the brand name EBO-JÄGER.

Having successfully marketed the JÄGER heaters in Europe for over a year, EHEIM is now unifying the marketing and sales activities world wide for it’s aquarium heaters under the original brand name JÄGER.

Surely if asked today, Gunter Eheim and the late Eugen Jäger, both the founders of their respective companies and the inventors of some of the aquarium hobby's most essential components, would view the statement “necessity is the mother of all invention” as the unifying birth point for EHEIM’s original canister filter and JÄGER’s original submersible aquarium heater.

Interestingly, the history of both companies share a common story. We all remember the well known story of how Gunter combined the pump from EHEIM’s model railway products to a canister and thus invented the first ever canister aquarium filter. As for Eugen’s invention of the submersible aquarium heater, the story goes like this: wanting to teach responsibility to his young son, Eugen gave his son Wolfgang, for his 12th birthday, an aquarium with tropical fishes. Unfortunately, the fishes died quickly as they were warm water fishes and the family lived in a small, poorly heated, basement apartment in Stuttgart, Germany. Being that his son was so disappointed in the death of the fishes, they went back to the fish dealer to discuss what they could do to improve their success. The fish expert explained that there is no good way to heat up aquarium water and suggested that they keep cold water species until the warm summer days before they try again with tropical fishes.

At the time, Mr Jäger had a small business winding glo plugs used in wooden carburetors for automotive engines. Using excess resistant wire left from the glo plugs production and glass cylinders to insure perfect insulation, the Jägers developed a waterproof insulated device utilizing electricity to heat up water in a thermostatically controlled manner. The rest as they say is history.

In the 1970’s, Wolfgang Jäger now operating the family business, met by chance a hobbyist and fish breeder named Erhard Boettger. Together they recognized the potential for aquarium heaters in North America and founded the EBO-JÄGER company based in California. Jäger in Germany supplied many of the components while final assembly, sales and distribution was handled by EBO-JÄGER.

The Boettgers, having invested 28 years in the development of their family business yet wanting to reap the fruits of their labor and seeing how well EHEIM had handled the acquisition of JÄGER GmbH decided that they could fully enjoy their retirement years if they entrusted the Ebo-Jäger brand to EHEIM.

EHEIM is excited by the opportunity to expand its product range and offer an aquarium heater line known world wide for their high quality and reliability. Jäger aquarium heaters use 2 mm thick scientific equipment grade Schott Duran© borosilicate glass for high thermal resistance. They also are equipped with an overheat protector. All of this mirrors EHEIM’s reputation for excellence in pioneering aquarium technologies for over 50 years. That’s why we can say with confidence “nothing beats the original”.

The brand name Jäger has been introduced to the North American market at the APPMA Show in New Orleans on March 17th - 19th, 2004.
