get 1x mp 40 you can dial it down, as ive herd you dont want to be running these at full speed or the noise can be a bit much, after the news of the mp 10 i bought a 20 for my 28 gallon because if i do go bigger I have alot of head room with it and the 20 also has an upgrade package to turn it into a 40 .

So in this case, If I put an mp40 in the middle or on the side opposite of where the overflow is, it would be better than having two mp10?
With the Vortechs and their wave function, you'll get a more sizeable and noticeable wave with one unit. Two units, unless they are coordinated (only possible with MP40, that I'm aware of), will result in a destructive wave interference. I think you may reap the full benefits of the wave motion (in terms of total water movement) with the MP40.

Where would be the most optimal position for it in the tank as well? All my rock is in the middle of the tank...none against the wall.
Not destructive as in causing mass destruction in your tank

In your case, I'd place it on one of the ends, not the center of the tank. You'll get the best overall flow patterns that way.
