Spend $1.99 on a bag of poly-fill floss at your local craft store.
I removed the pads, and some of the balls, from my 2217 and stuffed in a few good handfuls of the floss and my water was crystal clear inside of a day and a half.

Did you put the filter floss in any sort of bag or sleeve? I'll be getting a 2217 today or tomorrow and I've been thinking about how to keep filter floss in there. How often do you change the filter floss? Are you running any media or just the floss?
I just received my eheim classic 2217 today! Yahoo! I'll be setting it up after I get home from work tonight...before I go, I want to ask you guys a question. Is this eheim substrate worth using? http://www.bigalsonline.com/BigAlsUS/ctl3684/cp18402/si1380180/cl0/eheimsubstratpro5liter Bigal's gave me like 5 liter worth. And bio rings too...... Should I use these? or just stick to the white/blue filter pads
How could I have missed a thread about the good 'ol eheim 2217....
My preferred media for any canister is PLASTIC pot scrubbers from the dollar store. They've got tons of space for bacteria to grow, dont get clugged very easily, and well, they're a dollar.
pot scrubbers on the bottom, substrat on top and then filter floss on top of that. Make sure to add the media divider on top of the filter floss so it wont go directly into the impeller. Can rinse filter floss every 2-4 weeks. If it still looks clean after a rinse then keep it, if it looks dirty after the month then replace it.
