Eheim canister filter for 38g

After using a penguin 350 on my 38g tank for 2 years, I decided to find something less noisy. I did a lot of reading online, decided to go with an eheim canister filter. I ruled out the classic for several reasons, eventually decided to buy an ecco 2236.
However, I still consider eheim pro 2, which sounds lovely and got great ratings. The smaller model (2026) is for tanks up to 90g, but its specs show a much more powerful filter than the ecco (which is for up to 80g).
The tank currently holds 3 yoyo loaches, 3 diamond tetras, a couple of guppies and a dwarf gourami. I would like to be able to stock with different fish later (these were selected by my kids) so I'd rather choose the filter by the size of the tank, not necessarily current stock.
The question is, am I going too far? I keep reading you can't over filter but wonder if it's not a bit too much. If this is the case I will probably get the ecco 2334.

the eccos are basically the worst cans eheim makes, the pros are nice but spendy. for the best bang for your buck go classics, why dont you want to use em?
 
Mainly the lack of self priming, which while some consider to be no problem, others think is a huge PITA. Knowing my limitations, I'd rather stay away from it.
I don't like spending a lot of money on a filter, but as I can afford the pro 2, I will probably get it if I rule out the ecco's (if it's not indeed too much for my needs!).
 
I can say that I have tried and tested two different filters . The Eheim 2234 and a Fluval 304 . The Eheim filter has it all over this particular filter. I would greatly suggest the Eheim , and by the way the Ecco is a better filter than the smaller and less powerful Classic. IMO! Bottom line is you wont go wrong with an Eheim filter! Good luck.!
 
I have the Eheim Ecco 2234 on my 36 bow tank. I ran it for a few weeks on my other tank, then put it on my 36 when I set it up. Cycled in a week. It purges all the air out with just a lift of the handle and is primed in only seconds. Has baskets for whatever you want to put in it, and shutoff valves for both intake and outlets. I think it was a good deal and is a good filter, I used the Eheim installation kits so I could get rid of the ugly green stuff in my tank, and have a spray bar. I have very good water flow in my tank from it. I am very happy with it.

hate to burst your bubble but there is classics rated up to 900gph with a 18L media container:eek: but i would deffinately say that would blow your tank to pieces!

Very true, but since we are talking about a 38 gallon tank, high gph is not that important. For tanks smaller than 80 gallons the Ecco is superior to the Classic as it has the media baskets, easy priming and shutoff valves that make it much easier to use and maintain.
 
If you're on a budget go with the classic. It already includes media and priming it isn't really that hard as some people make it out to be. If you want to spend more go with the pro 2. The 2026 should be more than enough for your tank.
