HELP-- eheim leaks when power is off

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I bought a used eheim 2026 canister filter and it works great except if you shut the power off it leaks. When its running, its fine, I do not understand, any insight would be greatly appreciated.
my tanks

46 gallon bow - lake malawi species(4 yellow labs-3 red zebras-2 pseudo damasonis-1 electric blue-1 pleco

Ah yes, this problem, I sometimes have it too.

When you pull back the quick release valve, if it's not fully in the locked position (i.e. you will hear a click when it is fully locked), it begins to leak water (when it's off). However, when it's running, nothing is wrong.

I have a similar problem (I have a 2028), but it might be a manufacturing defect, or it might not be. Either way, I don't have a problem with it, because I always leave it in the "fully locked" position so it doesn't leak.

Bad/dryed out seal perhaps?

Reason being that when running, most cannisters are under a vacuum(except for the output), and water would not leak out, only air would be pulled in(possibly). When you turn it off, you lose the vacuum, and voila! Water Leak!
I would try to lube the seals/gaskets.

guys, make sure you're not using eheim's first generation double-tap unit for the 2026--do a search and you will find some articles on it. eheim is offering a replacement for that part. if your double-tap has a grey valve lever (not red), it is most likely the defective version which cause slight leakage near the hoses.

Really, I must learn more about this, is it on their official site? How do I go about getting a replacement?

From what I can tell, the water usually leaks from the lid, so I thought it might be an O-ring problem instead of a double tap problem

On top of this, after surfing and searching the official Eheim site (I can't read German, so I ended up randomly clicking, though it does become a bit intuitive after awhile :)), I can't find a Pro II model that has the red double tap as nvision mentionned.

I did however, find a Pro III model :P That will seem interestingly, though it only seems to be in Germany right now.

if the the lig check out the oring for cracks and make sure its seated. if it is you can wash and dry everything and then oil up the ring a little.

Every time my Eheims have leaked from around the lid, it was when the canister was either too dirty and flow was inhibited, or (more likely) the O-ring needs lubrication or replacement. I'd try a good thorough cleaning (especially the O-ring and where it seats) first. If that doesn't do the trick, you might need a new O-Ring.
