Electric Blue Jack Dempsey's worthless?

Out of a batch of frys you only get 15% EBJD and it seems as they grow they die off so I can't see them ever being to connnon. Plus the normal JDs with the EBJD gene are destroyed so they never hit the popular breeding market. So common I think not at least for a long time.

I'd be interested in finding out the circumstance under which EBJDs have been lost. Was there a UV sterilizer on the tank? Were they alone, or were there other fish in the tank? What were the water parameters?
No UV sterilizer in my case (I've lost three of the four that I bought - A single, and then two out of a group of three) . Fish were in with other species, but not being harassed. I don't have numbers for the water, but every time I've had it checked, there hasn't been anything out of line. I do 25% water changes per week, and my clown loaches would be the first to notice a problem with the water.

Mine were in 40 gallon all by themselves. Params seemed fine when tested and this was a brand new cycled tank.

So far so good

I purchased three young EBJDs on September 20 and placed them alone in my 135 gallon tank. There are several fish in the refugium/sump (55 gallon long), but overall I'd say there isn't more than 12 inches of fish for nearly 200 gallons.

It's now been three weeks and everything is wonderful. They mellowed out after the first week and aren't nearly so skittish of movement outside the tank. They have taken to eating flake food and I try to feed them small quantities once or twice daily.

I haven't been very proactive when it came to water changes since they have so much volume to themselves, but I've nearly completed my automatic water change system which will change out ~5% of the water daily.

Worthless...almost. Not a hardy fish. You see very few adults for a reason. But when they do grow up they are spectacular display fish.

Thats the nicest one I have seen. My male who has just had a batch of fries is about 6 inches now maybe 6 1/2. He doesnt have all that yellow and green in him. He is just a pretty blue and he has longer fins. The large males I have seen have longer fins kind of like batas.
I have 4 EBJDs juvs left out of the orignal batch of 7 I bought from Jeff Rapps. They are all over 2 inches now.

When I had 7 they were in a 40 gal with one common Jack about their size. I was doing this to try to get another pair.
I am up on water changes and I even use a diotome filter to do them every so often. No UV sterilizer.

re:

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL FISH! thats the biggest one i have seen :p: quite rare to see one that big, it should worth alot if they sell it, i wouldnt sell it lol :joke:

could be a combination of reccessive traits that may lead to the healthissues of these and other fish.

with angels the black veils are reportedly a bit harder to raise than other color morphs.

in the case of the EBJD I also prefer to think of it as a color morph(recessive gene)

other genes could be linked to other issues re: health.

just as in other species including humans we retain recessive genes that may make us more prone to alcoholism, cancer etc. that does not mean we will be showing these traits but they are present and could be linked to these health issues.
