Electric Blue Jack Dempsey's worthless?

Wow i was thinking bout getting some of these but now im starting to have second thoughts. I was gonna try to obtain some from Jeff Rapps but now I may hold off. They would be in my 20h gal till my new tank cycles which i should be getting in 2 months but would suck to lose such a beautiful n expensive fish. Curious do the normal JD that carry the blue genes have the same problems??? Ive seen some on aquabid that have the blue gene up for auction but they fetch a high price as well.

Wll I got 10 of the 1.5 to 2" EBJD. Out of thoes I hope to get a few full grown that are solid. The ones I have are doing good and bassed off what I read I am trying to be proactive. I will monthly treat for worms & External parasites. I am feeding garlic flake mixed with growth flake for now. I am keeping a close eye on them but they are doing awsom so far. I also bought medicated ffood which I think I will feed on a regular rotation. I hope to NOT loose them as others have BUT we will SEE?

I use 100% RO in all my tanks. I am not sure if that would help prevent parasites? My little guys are doing great so far but its just bin a few days.

To be honest, 100% RO is detrimental to fish unless you are supplementing. You have no KH or any minerals that are essential to the fish's health.

:iagree:

JDs originally come from waters that tend to have a higher pH and hardness. If you are going to use RO water you might want to add some aragonite gravel or sand to your substrate. Another suggestion would be to add a UV Sterilizer to your tank. I have both with good results. Good luck.

Well I add RO right and I plan to use sand in my 75Gal when I set it up for them. Should I just use tap water instead for them? The PH will jump to 8 from 7 !

Well I can do that easy! I use the RO/DI for my discus and just add all the additives back when I do water changes. I know RO/DI made a huge difference back in my saltwater hayday so I figured it would be good for freshwater also. Thanks for the Tip!

pH is irrelevant.

Everyone has their own opinion. Considering that its the minerals in the water that causes the pH and hardness of the water. I wouldn't say its irrelevant, otherwise, RO water would be fine. Granted, all EBs are numerous generations away from wild stock, but logic says that if you can give them as near to a natural environment as possible, it should help. I've had good luck with this approach, but others obviously have had equally good results. I was just giving you suggestions of what has worked for me. Once again, good luck with whatever you decide, but I still suggest a UVS no matter what water perameters you choose.
