electrocuted my fish any chance of survival?

I remember the bit in Jurassic Park where they're climbing the electric fence when it's turned on, and get shocked. Why? Unless they were also in contact with the earth, they would not even be aware it was live.

Alternate wires grounded? Most electric fences have only one hot wire... though most are not meant to contain dinosaurs.

Actually most electric fences have 1 ground wire, and it is usually the 2nd from the top, or the 2nd from the bottom...

The fish will be fine, there was no complete path for the current to go to ground.
you became a conductor and shorted the hood to ground, and completed the circuit.

I agree with the others that the fish will be fine and would caution against adding melafix for an unconfirmed problem. Dosing meds in a "shotgun fashion" never seems to work out well IMO. Sorry about your hood.

Now lets talk about why your nitrates were so high !!! thats a crazy number, if the shock was going to kill them I would think your nitrates are first and formost going to do that for you. wow thats high!!!!!!!!!!! lots of water changes my friend !!

Maybe in the future unplug everything before you start doing maintenance on your tank. It'll save you a shock if anything is wrong with your equipment. =)

That could do it. Obviously connecting two wires at the same PD wouldn't complete a circuit, but if some wires were grounded...

That's what I do. :)
