Emily's Pond Build Log

I think it makes it even more rewarding and awesome that you DIYed it. Not DIWO-Did It With Others.

I've got mixed info on the Calla lilies - anywhere from Zone 4 to Zone 8, so I'm not sure who to believe there.
Right now just perusing a pond plant website, but unfortunately it doesn't list zone info for the plants. Wish it did, as that would be infinitely more helpful. :) I'm also finding that some people consider me at zone 7 and some at zone 8, but the maps are REALLY far off from where they draw the lines, so I'm not sure who to believe there either.
The hibiscus are really appealing to me at this point. :) very pretty! But I'm starting a list so we'll see what we end up with.

part of the variability in the info on calla lilies might be a difference between the large white basic flower version and the smaller, colored ones. i would suggest that a call to your local nursery would settle the issue pretty quickly, rather than trying to get that clarified on the web

if we're talking about the same hibiscus plant -- classic red / pink / white family hibiscus, with the flowers that are about as big as your hand -- they need a lot of room because they can grow into pretty big bushes -- 6 - 8 feet tall and around, at least here in SoCal. definitely not candidates for those pots around the pond .

there are related plants with (relatively) small flowers, about an inch or so, that come in more colors including blues, but i've never grown them. again, a call to your nursery should be definitive.

Well darn. The hibiscus are so pretty! Definitely not for the pots though. I'll keep hunting. :) See, these pond plant sites just don't give a lot of the important details. They tell you what the plant looks like and whether it's bog or marginal, etc. But they don't tell me zone or how big they get, etc.

And tiger barbs in a pond??? LOL

I don't think they'll survive the winter.

Waterchange: Take 2.

So we started the pond draining first thing this morning. Planning to completely (or as close as possible) drain it, clean the sides, hose down the dirt and continue siphoning that out and get as much as possible out of it. I also think I know where the mud was coming in at when it rained, so I'm going to be fixing that today too. Then refill and cross our fingers because we're expecting more rain tomorrow or Monday. Hopefully eventually we'll get this thing clean. I'm also going to be cleaning out the filter today or tomorrow. Need to get the crud out of there too so we can avoid having it come back into the pond from the filter. Good thing I didn't waste my bottle of prime on this thing yet. I wasn't sure we were ready for that yet, so i hadn't dumped it in. I'm going to give it another week to make sure we aren't going to have to drain again before I dump the prime in and actually start cycling. Wish me luck!

Thanks. it's down a few inches. IT will be a loooooong day for it to drain completely. Good news is we have other projects to work on in the meantime. Building a shed out back today. :) I'll check in later with progress.
