Eradicating DuckWeed?

I have duckweed in my planted tank... I acctually like it there-- I just clear out about 50% of it every couple of weaks to keep it under control.

if you wanted to totally get rid of it.. just take a net and skim the top of the water untill its all gone-- its invasive but the good thing is that 99% of it stays on top of the water so its not that hard to catch

Hey Guys,

If any of you have ever had a duckweed infestation in your tank you must know how annoying the stuff can be, it blocks 99% of the light, clogs filters, and when it dies(some, not as a whole) it deteriorates and causes high nitrates. Other than doing a complete tank overhaul,I need some suggestions to get rid of the stuff... In a planted aquarium.

I'll take this chance to remind those with multiple tanks, Always wash your nets!

Many thanks-
Mark

Easiest way to eradicate duckweed in 3 steps, ya ready???

step 1: scoop out as much as you want gone
step 2: put in ziplock bags
step 3: send to me

haha...Welcome to AC!

I purposely grow duckweed.

I put it in all my tanks...and it is only taking hold in 1 tank. I watched one of my angels gobble some down this morning.:swear:

I had to pull out every stem of plant in the tank and meticulously comb through them to get rid of it. Got rid of it all though.

I can see how most find it a pain. I don't mind keeping a small patch in one of the corners of my tanks. My DH set up a bubble wall in one of his tanks to keep it all to one side and under control. My shrimp love to hang upside down from it and the guppy fry love to hide in it. I guess it's a plant many love to hate. ;) Just keep scooping it out. I keep a container in the window just for duckweed. I send some to my mom everynowandthen for her goldfish, it helps with digestion.

I would love to keep a culture of it growing to feed the pond, but I'm not willing to deal with it in any of hte display tanks lol. Maybe when its warmer if someone wanted to send me a LOT (like a pound or two worth) I can pay for shipping and try to keep it from all being eaten at once.

^^ LMAO! Guess we don't have to ask Mark how his duckweed managed to spread from one tank to another. lol.

I still don't see a problem with duckweed. When too much of my tank gets covered up, I wipe my hand across the surface 3-4 times and throw heaping handfulls of it in the trash can. It's not going to smother the top of your tank anyway unless you let it go unchecked. As often as we need to do water changes, it's real easy to scoop and discard as much as you don't want on a regular basis.
