euthanization of fish

How about freeing the fish? sure, it may be a little painful or slow, but at least the fish will be able to experience freedom for once in its life, let it go into a pond or stream, then eventually it will become a tasty and exotic treat for a local small animal

This is actually the worse thing that you could do, unfortunately.

I just put some crushed ice in small bowl of water, about half and half, put the fish in, it will give a couple of tail flicks then die quite peacefully. This seems to be a very painless way for both me and the fish, haven't had to do it too often thank goodness.

why? if the fish is dying anyway why not let it experience freedom? even if it strugles and sinks to the bottom, it got to be free.

Because you can spend up to 5 years in prison and receive up to a $100,000 fine for releasing a captive-kept fish into the wild.

Releasing fish from your aquarium into the wild is against the law for a reason, and you want to release not only a fish, but a diseased one. That's not exactly a "healthy snack" for the fish in the pond or lake. Your fish isn't going to see that pond or lake as "freedom." It's going to see it as being dropped into a new environment which = more stress than it's already experiencing.
