Fancy tailed goldfish? Questions, suggestions and HELP!

They'll be fine for a couple of months. Just make sure you buy a liquid test kit and keep an eye on the water parameters -- ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, pH. Ammonia and nitrites need to be at 0, nitrates ~20ppm.

Water changes of at least 50% per week should keep everything under control.

Yah, it is a lot of work at first, but once you get into it and get a rhythm going, it gets much easier. It won't be long until MTS (Multiple Tank Syndrom) sets in :) happens to all of us.

I feed my goldies flakes. I hold the flakes under the water and let them go so that they sink. I don't like pellets because they sink too fast and when they do they rot in the gravel. I hate that.

You're right, they generally shouldn't go with koi. The koi will usually out compete them for food, and may chase around and bully them a bit.

I've seen Koi kill Fancies outright.

I've seen Fancies rip the fins off Very Fancies.

Heck, I saw an Australian sp. (they all look alike as juvies) rainbowfish rip the eyes out of a Bubble Eye.

I'd never keep a Fancy or Very Fancy with any other fish.

It's amazing what you can see/learn when you visit LFSs and see what they keep with what -- the wrong way.

Yah, I wouldn't put your Fancy with the Koi in the pond.

Well, today I get up and the goldfish are frantically swimming around watching every move I make. It was funny, they sure wasn't doing that when my step daughter brought them here. I moved them next to my aquarium (55 gal w/platies and 1 angelfish). They seem a lot happier. I have started looking for a larger tank, my husband is actually enjoying the goldfish.

I took water tests today and everything is good for right now. I'm nervous b/c I don't want to kill them, but they couldn't stay in that small, over grown algae, tank that she brought them in.

Anyhow, I really appreciate everybody's help! And if there is anything else that you all think I need to know please don't hesitate to tell me!
thanks

rainbows with golds? Personally I don't think they'd even look like it's something the fish store should be doing.
It jumped the divider. I helped the guy put them back, but he had already injured or killed every Fancy in the tank. All the Bubble eyes were history and the rest had shredded or ripped fins.

Rainbows ain't as "nice" as they get made out to be. They can be real mean sobs, especially when spawning.

How horrible! Which leads me to ask why did they put them "next door" to one another?

I think I just answered my own question! Either way that is still horrible! I wonder if they rethought thier stocking arrangments?

They didn't know. Most people don't realize that rainbowfish are great, but like a lot of fish they will attack fish that are deformed, sick, or weak. It's just nature culling those that normally wouldn't survive in the wild.

As for their stocking, most LFS employees either don't know or don't think or don't care. The fish are just revenue and they probably just write a lot off all the time.

I went in one day and saw they had a wonderful school of 13 or so bronze corydoras. They were just babies, less than an inch and most were about ½". Then I noticed they had put a bichir in with them. Can you imagine? I was *really* mad. I asked them to catch as many of the corys as they could and I would buy them. As the guy was doing that he knocked over one of the decorations and there, hiding inside, was a very pale and terrified elephant nose!

I was LIVID by then. I had gone in there for some cories, so that actually worked out, but that poor elephant nose. No room for him in my tank :(

ANYHOW -- How are your goldies doing????
