Fast-acting thermometer?

tropical fish tanks have temperature that average from 70-80 degrees fahrenheit, thats no where near the temperature of very hot water and not enough to corrode and dissolve away heavy metals from your metal pipes.

an aquarist would never need to add water that hot, directly into their aquarium. for one thing it can kill their fish.

DO NOT PUT HOT H20 FROM THE TAP INTO THE AQUARIUM heavy elements such a copper and zinc will disslove in the water of a water heater. I don't consume water from my water heater why should my fish.

Your best bet is to transfer the water to the aquarium by siphon with small tubing or buy an extra heater for you water bucket

Lots of things factor into the "hot water heater" equation. Number one, do you have copper pipes, how old is your hot water hearter, has the sedements ever been cleaned out, etc. There are plenty of ppl, including ppl with marine tanks that use water straight from the tap.

If you dont drink water from your hot water heater..you may want to see about getting a new one... :)

Thanks everyone, I do appreciate all the responses.

First, for those who responded about thermometers, thanks. I was using a digital thermometer, but I've since learned that there are different types of sensors that are used. The least expensive ones use a material that does not give rapid results. But, I'll assume the ones suggested all give fast, i.e. 5 second or less results.

No doubt in time that I'll be able to tell the right temp by touch. Right now though, I've been way off guessing.

Bob, yeah, I need a better faucet, but I'd have replace my wife's fancy kitchen sink. BTW, tonight I hooked up to the bathroom sink which was much better - but I didn't notice that the python wasn't tight enough and since it was out of sight, I soaked the bathroom wall!

Andrew, thanks for the caution, but, I'm not worried about my hot water. I use a water conditioner treating the entire water tank before adding, secondly, my home is 10 years old, and I just had to replace the hot water heater a couple of months ago. But, you are right... until then, I did not realize a hot water heater needs to be drained regularly and there were A TON of minerals sticking to everything which I don't have now with the new tank. I will be making sure I do maintenance on this new tank, not so much for the fish, but for us.

Appreciate all the answers, and will pick up one of the suggestions next week. THANK YOU.

I am a toyota tech so I use my Snap On digital thermometer.. It is a point and shoot... It emits a red laser beam to tell you where your measuring. Only prob is that it cost close to $200.00us.

edit... By the way this thermometer is instant... As soon as you pull the trigger a digital reading is instantly on the screen. + or - .2 degrees

this can easily be combated by adding a full dose of water conditioner (size of your tank, not amount of water your replacing)

I only use the amount I'm adding to the water. Does it matter?

Some conditioners, like Prime, recommend adding for the tank volume if filling straight to the tank, vice bucket adds that can be pre-treated.
