are guppies the fastest? i want something that will breed fast enough to sustain a population for my crayfish to eat what he wants but still have some guppies in the tank. other tankmates will be 4 fishing minnows. i plan on a bunch of internal filters with my screen top.

My brother started off with 4 guppies, he had about 50 until I forced him to re-home them. It took about 4 months to get that many.

I would try Molly's since they are larger and they breed similarly.

Guppies give birth to about 15-20 fry at a time.

To get a good population going I would get about 4-5 females to 1 male. They give birth every month or two.

You may want to set-up a tank just for breeding them, that way you can get the population started before hand. I'm not an expert by any means, but guppies seem to breed the fastest. Platies are another good choice, although they'd be easier for the cray to catch (making them run out sooner) they also are a bit meatier. Adding in java moss and using sponge filters (or covering a hob intake with pantyhose) will greatly increase the fry's chance of survival.

guppies for sheer speed of reproduction; mollies I would rank second of the livebearers I've had. Endlers, while prolific, are probably too small to be of much value as foodstock. Overall my vote would be for mollies. Same suggested strategy as noted by user_name: get a breeding tank rather than keep parents in the same tank with crayfish.

I fear the adults would be in danger themselves, crayfish (crawdads to those of us from certain parts of the country) are mean little buggers that way. Some nice regular mollies (don't bother with sailfins and balloons and other exotic varieties) in colors of your preference, a few plants and it will be a lovely tank in its own regard as well as serving "circle of life" requirements. :)

ok ill get some pantyhose. the only tank i could use would be 5 and that would.just be until i found a betta.
How often will you live-feed your crayfish?

i was hoping for something i could keep witb him that would breed so fast that the crayfish could.eat as much as he wants without eating them all.

A 5 gallon should work as a breeder, I would get a ball of some sort of plant for the fry to hide in so the hungry parents don't eat it. A Betta would eat the fry as well.

But for a 5 gallon, guppies would be more of a snack than part of the crayfish's diet.

i really just wanted a fish that i could keep in the tank. no breeding tank. maybe if i bought some guppies on here that are already close to having babies tben that would work.

Crayfish eat most fish :(

You can buy pregnant guppies at petsmart, the petsmart that I go to always has a pregnant guppy or two.

If there is room for a sump in the stand, just put the tank there. Get a cheap filter and everything else a tank needs, and you got a guppy breeder.

They will breed very fast if you get enough females, but it takes about a month until it would be worth feeding it to your crayfish.
