Good luck, keep us informed on if the crayfish eats the guppies.

I would only start off with a few guppies, just to make sure your crayfish doesn't eat them all in one day.

Guppies give birth to about 15-20 fry at a time.

To get a good population going I would get about 4-5 females to 1 male. They give birth every month or two.

They have allot more then that at a time, yeah sure for the first few drops she will have that many but as they age and grow larger.. about 6 months to a year ( i had females almost 3 inches) they would pumping out 80-100 fry ever 3 weeks.

so maybe i should post an add for older females then?

Guppies give birth about once a month. Takes about 3 months for the babies to reach breeding age, maybe a little more, then another month for them to carry. So you're looking at 4-5 months between generations. Make sure you start off with quite a few females to one or two males, or you wont have enough fry.

Another thing to consider is that guppy fry are surface swimmers. If you want a better chance for your cray to get some fry, go with swordtails. They generally stay towards the bottom in my experience. Swordtails have a little longer between birthings (average 34 days) and take about 4 months to mature, so slightly longer generation times.

Depending on the type of cray, adult guppies arent out of the question either, which might throw some kinks into the plan. Also, feeding the fry for faster growth may also feed the cray. It may not opt to eat as many fry as you would like.

the guppies are for some color and activity as well as a food source. if he eats an adult its ok and if he doesnt eat any its ok. how many should i start with?

I've had 8 feeders (2x males and 6x females) in my tank that were used to cycle it a few months back and I've seen two fry make it to a nice hiding spot and avoid instant-death by cannibalism. I have no idea how many they've given birth to in total since they seem to livebear when I'm not around, most likely at night when I'm sleeping. Those two were literally the only ones I've seen. Those two lasted two weeks tops before their own kin munched them down, but that's because I fasted the adults to help the cycle along at one point. When they were well fed, the adults even swam near them and didn't harass them at all when the fry were bold enough to pop out for a snack during feeding.

With that said, make sure you set your breeder tank up to avoid them cannibalizing the fry. They seem especially fond of eating them, heh. Lots of floating plants should help if you don't separate.
