Febreeze (and the like)

Products like fabreeze just mask odors. I would rather clean and get rid of source odors with plain old vinegar and water solution, it is eco-safe and allergen free. A weak solution in a spray bottle works, and after it dries the frenchfry smell disappears too.

Yes and no. The weak bleach solution will kill bacteria that cause odor, but there is also a scent added.

Thank you for all your replies. Sometimes fish are more sensitive to certain airborne chemicals than others. Some of the fish in my friends tank died suddenly and I would like to blame some outer source. All of the water parameters were fine. Just trying to get to the bottom of it. I thought maybe Febreeze, which she does spray occasionally, would be the culprit. But, I think we may need to search harder.

I could be wrong, but I thought I read a while back that febreeze is very bad for dogs and cats. I have too many pets to take the chance, I think some of that stuff is scary!!!!

Do a little internet searching for those topics and you will read both sides of the story about it poisoning dogs and cats and birds.

I read an article a few years back about Febreeze being hazardous to dogs and cats. Apparently, it is not harmful to these pets and was a scam to put Febreeze in a bad light. As we have all learned, fish are very delicate creatures to domesticate within the confines of their four walls and I believe, therefore, are much more suseptible to chemicals that may find their way into the water.

As is turns out, I have just found out tonight, that the Onyx substrate which the manufacturer claims to have a slight buffering capacity is the culprit in this particular case. The water's pH had skyrocketed and when a 50% water change was performed, the pH had dropped too suddenly for some fish to adjust.
